Advantages: WOW, realistic, entertaining
Disadvantages: perhaps not to everyones taste, some may prefer real actors!!

...and capable, Aki strives as Earth`s last hope against extinction. This forms the basis of the film. With the guidance of her scientific mentor, Dr. Sid, and the aid of the Deep Eyes military squadron led by the courageous Captain Gray Edwards, Aki races to save both the Earth and herself. Terminally infected by an alien, Aki holds the key to discovering the secret to defeating the alien predators. But her quest is jeopardized by the militant opposition of General Hein, who plots to unleash a massive space cannon, known as the Zeus Cannon, that will annihilate the aliens and possibly the Earth. As the clock ticks down, Aki searches within her dreams to find an answer to the alien mystery, while scouring the Earth to collect the eight spirit waves she believes will save the planet. So did I enjoy the film, yes I did and I would watch it again... Read review

Forgotten Fantasy
Review of Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within DVD by 3rdRockSatan

Advantages: Great to look at
Disadvantages: Not the best story | Standard sci-fi goings on

...segments that are still standing are dreary, depressing areas protected by barriers. These barriers are to keep out the ‘Phantoms’ that have been waging a war against Earth for a number of years and, the clue is in the name, the Phantoms are sneaky blighters, which can rarely be seen by the naked eye leaving humans in constant fear. As the war goes on the Earths council, probably made up of the finest politicians, military and celebrities known in that time, are facing two options to eradicate the Phantoms. The first is to aim a massive gun at the main problem and blow it up, as proposed by General Hein (James Woods). The other is put forward by researchers Aki Ross (Ming-Na) and Doctor Sid (Donald Sutherland) who put forward the idea that by collecting eight spirits they can contain and eradicate the Phantoms from Earth without any... A bold attempt that doesn't quite convince
Review of Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within DVD by Simoncook1

Advantages: Very good animations and excellent sound
Disadvantages: Characters not quite realistic

..., and the use of ‘camera angles’ very clever to give the movie a feel of being produced in a real setting. The main downfall of the movie is the human figures. They are excellent, but still even with the freckles and the moving hair they are not quite believable. The movement is excellent and not jerky, however I fell that the animation was just a little too clean. Dr Aki’s hair never got messed up; no one ever got dirty; clothes weren’t ripped; sweat didn’t collect on the clothes. These are minor problems that probably don’t have too much effect on the realism of the movie, however the two major flaws were the speech and the emotions. Although the lip sinking was good there were still some times in the movie where you could detect that this was an animation. The emotions are perhaps the hardest things to animate... Read review
