'Agitator' - Japan - 2002
'Agitator' is a Japanese gangster film by ultra prolific, maverick director Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi The Killer). It's a change of pace for the director who is more usually associated with ultra-disturbing horror and frenetic crime films. 'Agitator' is claimed to be, one of Miike's best films and I would certainly agree. It's certainly on a par with many of the classic US gangster films in it's rich complexity and ... ...young Yakuza enforcer Kenzaki (Masaya Kato) and his hit-squad. In the films only truly shocking scene, which occurs very early on, a rival clan starts a gang war on purpose. Pretty soon Kenzaki and his men find themselves embroiled in a bitter and violent feud. Increasingly isolated and alone after their boss is killed and their 'Group' subsumed by their rivals they start to take matters into their own hands.
