Ah, get the hankies at the ready for another good old fashioned weepy. I love these kinds of films, which I suppose is regarded as unusual by some given my gender. Perhaps I should be reviewing Die Hard or some other stereotypical masculine movie, and perhaps I will, but for now, I'll settle for the good ol' romance.
Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star as the love struck pair aboard a ocean cruiser heading back to USA to meet their respective fiancés. Kerr is initially resistant to Crants charms. 'Infernal Affairs' in a dark, fast pace thriller movie that was highly acclaimed in Hong Kong. The story follows two leading characters, Chan (Tony Leung) and Lau (Andy Lau). They were under the programme of what was called 'Long-Term Undercovering'. Perhaps both men did not realize what they were in for when they took it up. Soon, not being able to live their lives and being in this operation for ten years; it has taken the toll of both characters, especially Chan.
Chan was a high-flying, high achieving young police officer when he started the force. His ability was soon beginning recognized by all. However, one day, Chan was booted out of the force in front of his fellow officers, claiming Chan broke some rules and it is the consequences that all officers will suffer, if they wish to follow ...
Advantages: Fantastic pacing, more depth than most film of its type, Tony Leung. Disadvantages: Attempts at humor fail, some characters lacking.
through their respective institutions, to the point where Chan is trusted dearly by Sam (Eric Tsang), the leader of the mob group that Lau works for. When both sides eventually discover that a mole exists on both sides, both Lau and Chan race to idenitify and expose the other before they become comprimised themselves.
This is just scratching the surface of Infernal Affairs, which manages to cover a lot more within it's brief for the subject running time. While Michael Mann spent over three hours covering similar topics, directors Wai Keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak manage to weave a story that is just as complex is around half the time. This kind of pacing mean that the film always has a sense of urgency, something that is needed in a film of this nature.
