My boyfriend always wants to rent a film for the evening whereas I would be happy watching whatever is on the tele. But last night he managed to talk me around, well what I really mean is I gave in. We went to the local rent shop and he spent ages umming and ahhing about what to get, while I wondered around dreaming of being at home curled up on the sofa watching awful tele. Eventually he picked out Aeon Flux. I'm not really a film person so I had no idea what it was about let alone whether it would be any good.
Background - Before Aeon Flux In 2011 a terrible virus wipes out 99% of the world's population and only 5million people survive. A world renowned scientist develops a cure for this terrible disease and founds the city of Bregna. The world outside turns into uncontrollable wilderness and so a wall is built around Bregna to keep it out. Hundreds of years later people start mysteriously disappearing but the government say they have the problem under control.
Aeon Flux There is an uprising against the government in 2415. The monicans, including Aeon Flux, do all they can to free people of the oppression of the government of Bregna. They try to answer the questions of why so many people are going missing and why
nobody else asks any questions. One day after Aeon is sent "blind" government surveillance her sister is killed and she swears revenge on the people behind it; she assumes this will be the government leader. She is then glad when she is sent to kill president of Bregna, as it gives her the chance for vengeance. But when the two come face to face something stops Aeon in her tracks and from her an entirely new and unexpected world of lies and secrets emerges. She remains focussed on avenging her sister's death with many adventures along the way.
The film is based on an animated MTV series. I checked out the MTV website and the Aeon Flux tag line is "Fighting for Survival in Leather", if you have seen this film you will recognise the similarities to the show just from this phrase.
The cast is headed by the slimmed down Charlize Theron who plays Aeon Flux as the leading agent of the Monican uprising. Marton Csokas plays Trevor Goodchild the leader of the Bregna government. Johnny Lee Miller plays Trevor's brother Oren Goodchild. Sophie Okonedo plays Sithandra Aeon's fourhanded comrade. Pete Postlewaite plays the keeper, living in a giant blimp floating over Bregna said to be a memorial of what they have all survived. Amelia Warner plays Aeon's sister Una for a short time. Caroline Chekezie plays Freya, Trevor's top agent. Frances McDormand plays the Handler, the leader of the Monicans.
There are a number of fight scenes throughout this film; most, of course, including Aeon Flux. She fights Freya after she escapes from a government cell. She fights Sithrandra after she aborts her mission to try and discover the truth. She also fights a lot of unnamed government agents. Most of these scenes include martial arts fights with a lot of high kicking, punches and pressure points. Though there is also a lot of gun violence. There are some fights scenes, which do not include Aeon however these are not as long or complex.
The special effects throughout the film are quite good. There is one scene, which really illustrates how good these are; Aeon is snooping through Trevor's private rooms and finds a harness with a large button in the middle. She puts in on and when the button is pressed it transports her to another room of completely different design. Freya finds her and an elaborate fight scene begins while they frequently move between the rooms. There are other scenes where Aeon swallows a small pellet and you watch the chemicals move through her body to her brain. Here a message is transmitted directly to her mind, I thought this was a very clever idea. Other scenes include Aeon flying high above Bregna with very little support.
As soon as this film started I thought it resembled the Matrix. My boyfriend likened it to the hybrid of the Matrix and Dark City. Although the film was enjoyable the storyline was weak, as they tend to be when based on animations or computer games. The twists and turns in the plot were however quite clever and made the film quite enjoyable. However I felt love scenes and the overall underlying theme of love ruined the film slightly. Although the special effects were good they did not make up for the poor story. The fight scenes and character interactions were not very believable and this made it difficult to really become involved in the film.
If you are bored and a friend can lend you this film I would recommend it. But, I wouldn't recommend going out and buying it or even paying to rent it.

I've seen clips of the animated series and it looked pretty innovative - it's a shame they had to make it into a live-action film, as this looks and sounds very ordinary. Fine review! :) tom
