her attentions to a tough female superhero in AEON FLUX. Based on a series of animated shorts that aired on MTV, the live-action feature film version stars Charlize Theron, in jet black hair, as the secret agent of the title. Aeon Flux is a Monican who has been ordered to assassinate Trevor Goodchild (Martin Csokas), the leader of Bregna a futuristic walled city that is the last vestige of humanity on 25th-Century earth. But a long-buried memory prevents her from killing him, ultimately making both of them targets. As Trevor battles his brother, Oren (Jonny Lee Miller), for control of Bregna, Aeon seeks revenge for the murder of her sister (Amelia Warner) while also being hunted down by her former partner, Sithandra (Sophie Okonedo). At the centre of it all is a secret that threatens to tear everything apart. Theron, who performed most of her own stunts, glides through the film in barely-there outfits, while also jumping, running, slinking, diving, and cartwheeling her way through dangerous situations, recalling the gorgeous movements made by the animated version. The film alternates between stark gray-and-white sets and brilliant splashes of red, green, and yellow, adding a vibrancy that befits a cartoon adaptation. The taut script, by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi (who previously teamed up on CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL), delves deep into the relationships of siblings that often border between love and hate. Graeme Revell's smart score never overwhelms the action, which involves a lot of automatic weapons, and Oscar winner Frances McDormand and Oscar nominee Pete Postlethwaite feature in small roles.

Advantages: GREAT stunts and special effects, Theron looking stunning! Disadvantages: Some of the characters lack the depth that would make them engaging
AeonFlux
Firstly, I'll admit that I rented this film on the purely superficial and shallow basis that Charlize Theron looked brilliant in the promotional pics and trailers for this film. However, I have to say that it delivered purely as a film on its own.
STORYLINE
The storyline is not bad at all. The film is basically, a post-apocalyptic femme fatale movie. We enter a world, known as Bregna which on the face of it is Utopia, a perfect society. The film takes place 400 years into the future and Bregna is what is left of the world after a virus wiped out ninety percent of the population. Now the world is regulated by a group of scientists who descend from the scientists who cured this virus - a bit far fetched, I know. However, all is not well in this society, and Charlize Theron, plays AeonFlux, an assassin kitted up in ...

Advantages: Decent enough in places; Theron's wardrobe! Disadvantages: No oomph at all; more like an episode of a TV series than a film
I've been putting off watching AeonFlux for a while, although I'm not too sure why. It probably had something to do with the negative feedback it gained after promising so much. Adapted from a sci-fi series in the early 1990s and starring Charlize Theron, who is usually on fire on screen, I was surprised when it got slated, but last night, with the wife round at a friend's house and son William tucked up in bed, I thought I'd give it a go.
The plot is far fetched, but then it's sci-fi fantasy. In the year 2011, a virus kills 99% of the World's population. Dr Goodchild creates a vaccine, and takes the remaining 5 million inhabitants to a safe location to try and reconstruct humanity. 400 years later, the Goodchilds have continued to run the government and improve things, but now there is a small gang of fighters known as the Monicans ...

Advantages: It won't make its budget back Disadvantages: Where do I start?!?
In 2415, the survivors of an apocalyptic global plague live in a walled paradise by the name of Bregna, presided over by Trevor Goodchild and his brother Oren. But all is not well in the in the city - a police state in which people have a worrying habit of disappearing and the populace are haunted by strange dreams. Freedom fighters the Monicans send in their most skilled operative to bring down the city's leaders. Her name is AeonFlux, an acrobatic assassin out for revenge against the men she blames for her sister's death.
Since the departure of the Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, cinema has been crying out for another female action heroine. But from the look of this nonsensical bucket of tripe, it will have to wait a while longer. So what went wrong? All the elements are here; director Karyn Kusama was at the helm of critically ...
