Aeon Flux. It's very rare that I see a film I hate (only Cutthroat Island and Battlefield Earth have ever received one star from me), but in this absolutely awful sci-fi action flick, we have another. Maybe the fact that I had just seen the brilliant Crash biased my judgement, but I couldn't help feeling that in the same day I had watched the best and worst film of the last year.
As soon as the credits said it was an MTV production I knew we were heading for bad things. However, I was still surprised at just how dire the next 90 minutes would be, since it has a promising cast and a half-decent idea. Apparently it's based on a cartoon which used to be on MTV... hardly inspires you with confidence, does it? This film version is directed by Karyn Kusama, who previously made "Girlfight". And also apparently, the studio, Paramount, tried to keep this under wraps and released it with very little fanfare. We can see why.
Charlize Theron plays Aeon Flux, who in the year 2415, decides to stand up to the ruler of a utopian city, Bregna, which is Earth's last populated city after a virus wiped out 99% of the population 400 years back. You see, she is a member of an organisation called the Monicans, who are sick of living in this seemingly perfect world, and see it as little more than a gilded cage. When the government murders her sister, Aeon's life is dedicated to one thing: killing those responsible. And yes, just to give you a feel of the movie; I did say the story was the best bit.
As well as the A-list talents of Charlize Theron, there is also support from Sophie Okenedo as Aeon's sidekick, Jonny Lee Miller as the ruler's brother, and wait for it… Pete Poselthwaite! Playing an old guy (we'll come on to him later). On the final credits, I also read that Frances McDormand was in it, although I don't know who she was playing. Plus that black guy from Green Wing and Hyperdrive who seems to be in everything these days, he was in this too! I have absolutely no idea what all these fine actors are doing in this rubbish; maybe this is Charlize Theron's Catwoman.
Since I've just mentioned the actors, I'll start my rant with the acting. It was awful! Charlize Theron has won an Oscar and been nominated again this year, yet how is she so bad in this? She is completely wooden and seems to be there just to jump around and blow things up. Sophie Okenedo: she's a good actress from Hotel Rwanda and Dirty Pretty Things, yet in this she too is crap. Pete Poselthwaite wears probably the most ridiculous costume I have ever seen in my life! It's like a dress with a big ring around his neck; it has to be seen to be believed. The guy playing the ruler of the city is called Marton Csokas I think; he's actually not that bad. But I suppose the reason the acting is so bad is because they have nothing interesting to say; the script is completely flat and boring.
Next on the list of shame… basically, the whole thing is just so unintentionally funny, due to a complete lack of any of it making sense. Sophie Okenedo's character has hands instead of feet - why? Who knows! Aeon keeps consulting a crazy old lady with mad orange hair inside her own brain, and we're supposed to be taking it seriously. In a world full of characters with futuristic names, the main guy is called… Trevor! Oh I could go on all night, it's so hilarious! There's a bit where she's trapped in a room, so she randomly whistles and these metal ball bearings start rolling around the building, they roll all the way up to her wall and suddenly explode and she escapes. Nothing in this film is explained.
The so called action scenes are boring, repetitive and downright stupid. When Aeon and her sidekick are trying to break into some headquarters, they back flip through a garden whilst having trees fire bullets at them, and spikes coming up out of the grass. Aeon is about to land face first on the spikes, but she sticks her legs out and magically sticks to the walls, facing down, with her legs at 90 degrees to her body. It's ridiculous. And then they have the audacity to follow it with a completely cheesy and unfunny one-liner, "I'd keep of the grass". Oh I hate this film so much! Plus all the action descends into explosions and shooting everyone in sight, which is not exciting or thrilling in the slightest, just a cheap Matrix rip-off.
One thing that annoys me so much is how all the characters just back flip around everywhere. It would seem that in the future walking has become obsolete - the new way to travel is by flying through the air. Whether it's a fight scene, escaping from gunfire, or simply jumping over a gap, why do they have to somersault? It's like watching Power Rangers again.
The special effects - well, they're technically quite good, and I'm sure they put lots of time and money into it - I admit, the film looks stunning. It's just that if you haven't got anything intelligent to show with special effects, the experience is somewhat limited. For example, we get repeat shots of an airship flying around with long tails floating behind it. What is it? Who knows, it's just there, along with the countless other unexplained "futuristic" nonsense in this film. There's a bit near the start when she hangs from a rope, Mission Impossible style, to look down into a pool full of clips of her life. A whirlpool starts in the water, she puts in a metal object, and up she goes whilst the screen starts flashing with bright colours. And then it's just left, and not explained at all.
So, just to recap: the acting is crap, the action is crap, the dialogue is crap, the special effects are good but completely pointless, most of the story doesn't make sense… I really could go on, but I think you get the gist by now. Aeon Flux is truly one of the worst films I have ever seen, and I think definitely the worst film of the last 12 months or so. Yes, even worse than Bewitched! As my friends and I came out of the cinema, we were all laughing our heads off that we paid good money, when there were so many other good films out, to see this rubbish. I would recommend going to watch it for a laugh, but if they get high audiences, who knows, they might make a sequel. AAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!! ________________________________________

...city's leaders. Her name is Aeon Flux, an acrobatic assassin out for revenge against the men she blames for her sister's death.
Since the departure of the Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, cinema has been crying out for another female action heroine. But from the look of this nonsensical bucket of tripe, it will have to wait a while longer. So what went wrong? All the elements are here; director Karyn Kusama was at the helm of critically-acclaimed "GIrlfight" ... ...to a product recall. When Aeon says at the climax "Now we can move forwards", you want to add "because now there isn't a dirty great wall in the way!" In fact some of the script is so risible that you might actually find yourself slapping your forehead in disbelief. The plot twists are similarly laughable; the "surprise" bad guy may as well be carrying a flashing neon sign declaring himself as such. At least he has a clear goal, unlike the majority ...

Advantages: Johnny Lee Miller back in action is about it! Disadvantages: Everything else is just cliched and awful!
Aeon Flux started as a series of short animated episodes on MTV where a gun toting, black catsuit wearing female killed just about everyone in sight before, invariably, dying at the end of the story. This format turned out to be very successful and Aeon Flux moved on to 20 minute stories which allowed a bit more story but still pretty much followed the same idea. There are those that don't agree though, The Monicans, as they are called, don't think that the Goodchild dynasty, ...

Advantages: Decent enough in places; Theron's wardrobe! Disadvantages: No oomph at all; more like an episode of a TV series than a film
I've been putting off watching Aeon Flux for a while, although I'm not too sure why. It probably had something to do with the negative feedback it gained after promising so much. Adapted from a sci-fi series in the early 1990s and starring Charlize Theron, who is usually on fire on screen, I was surprised when it got slated, but last night, with the wife round at a friend's house and son William tucked up in bed, I thought I'd give it a go.
The ... ...So, the plot seems okay. Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron) is a Monican, and teams up with Sithandra (Sophie OKenodo) to infiltrate Goodchild's base and take him out. She is sent by the Handler (Frances McDormand), and this is where the sci-fi kicks in. The Handler communicates via a sort of telepathic link, with the Monicans swallowing a pill which connects to the neurons in the brain and visualises the recipient in a chamber, having a conversation. Other ...

Advantages: Enjoyable action film Disadvantages: Very unoriginal
take, sadly it didn't really work but it was impressively like anime from the settings to the costumes to the way some of the characters looked and acted.
I've given the film three stars because although I have a few complaints with it I found it watchable enough and overall mediocre. I wouldn't watch it again and I definitely wouldn't buy it on DVD. I would, however, recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Resident Evil , AeonFlux and Underworld . Fans of Equilibrium may find this to be just a slightly dumbed down version. Equilibrium had a great dystopian plot and rather good acting and you could sort of wringe a moral from it, Ultraviolet had al the same action etc but was just a little dryer.

DVD Description
Karyn Kusama, the writer-director of GIRLFIGHT, the story of a tough female boxer, turns her attentions to a tough female superhero in AEON FLUX. Based on a series of animated shorts that aired on MTV, the live-action feature film version stars Charlize Theron, in jet black hair, as the secret agent of the title. Aeon Flux is a Monican who has been ordered to assassinate Trevor Goodchild (Martin Csokas), the leader of Bregna a futuristic walled city that is the last vestige of humanity on 25th-Century earth. But a long-buried memory prevents her from killing him, ultimately making both of them targets. As Trevor battles his brother, Oren (Jonny Lee Miller), for control of Bregna, Aeon seeks revenge for the murder of her sister (Amelia Warner) while also being hunted down by her former partner, Sithandra (Sophie Okonedo). At the centre of it all is a secret that threatens to tear everything apart. Theron, who performed most of her own stunts, glides through the film in barely-there outfits, while also jumping, running, slinking, diving, and cartwheeling her way through dangerous situations, recalling the gorgeous movements made by the animated version. The film alternates between stark gray-and-white sets and brilliant splashes of red, green, and yellow, adding a vibrancy that befits a cartoon adaptation. The taut script, by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi (who previously teamed up on CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL), delves deep into the relationships of siblings that often border between love and hate. Graeme Revell's smart score never overwhelms the action, which involves a lot of automatic weapons, and Oscar winner Frances McDormand and Oscar nominee Pete Postlethwaite feature in small roles.
