...the humour is that the Addams family are unconventional in that they see beauty as ugly, the absurd as normal and the gross as a standard form of behaviour. They are of course ghouls, spirits or the undead but who cares they love each other. The story line, such as it is, concerns the returning Uncle Fester and the view that he is not all he seems. ...I always saw The Addams Family television show as being a poor relation to the much better Munsters show. However, it is The Addams Family which has made it onto the silver screen whilst The Munsters carries on languishing back in the sixties, to be re-run on channel 4 at 5am during the next school holiday. The Addams Family was released in 1991 and was such a hit that they immediately commissioned a sequel, Addam's Family Values. Whereas the original black and white TV shows (and the new 90s version) were played for slapstick laughs, this film's humour is as black as night, as dry as a bone and all the better for it.
