I bought the Adam and Joe DVD as a present for my boyfriend knowing he'd enjoyed watching it back in the day (the show ran from 1996 to 2001). Although I enjoyed watching the series I wasn't expecting too much from the DVD as there were a few sketches that were always a bit hit or miss. However the DVD is a condensed version of the four series' of "The Adam and Joe show" that were originally shown on channel 4. It contains all the "best bits" and is to summarize in one word- HILARIOUS,
The show took the form of short sketches with links filmed in Adam and Joe's "bedsit" in London. 'Adam and Joe' are Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish, two friends who met at school and have been working together on comedy sketches and projects ever since.
As I mentioned the show is sketch based, and the DVD is a compilation of all the best sketches. The DVD comprises of some of the best of the different types of sketches, these were;
- Toymovies [Adam and Joe would re-create popular movies using only cuddly toys and cardboard sets! These toymovies would only last a couple of minutes and some of the best included Toytanic (Titanic), Toytrainspotting (Trainspotting) and The toy patient (The english patient).]
- Baaadad [Adam's father, Nigel Buxton, would review contemporary music videos and modern culture.
- Vinyl Justice [Adam and Joe (dressed as policemen) would raise celebrities houses and force them to dance to the shameful records they discovered in their record collections. Victims included Gary Numan and Ray Manzerak (of The Doors).]
- Star Wars TV [parodies of popular television shows using 1980's starwars figurines]
- Songs and Pranks [self explanatory?]
The sketches on the DVD have a running time of 142 mins, with an added 77 mins of extras! The extras include; - The Story of Adam and Joe (A 40 minute journey through Adam and Joe's home video and out-take archive) - Baaadad Revisited (Mr Buxton presents the highlights of his reviews) - The Best of Vinyl Justice (Highlights of the best raids) - Adam and Joe's World of Sound (30 minutes of songs, prank calls and "random audio nonsense") - Ken Korda: Making it in the Movies - Ken Korda: Making the Band (Ken -an idiotic media entrepreneur undertaking absurd pop cultural projects in the real world) - Play the toymovies from one menu - Commentaries
Despite having been involved with projects before and after The Adam and Joe Show, it is their most popular and well-known creation, and has certainly gained a cult following. If you enjoy comedy with a wicked twist like 'The Mighty Boosh' I would definitely recommend giving this DVD a chance.
The show is often described as one of the definitive pop culture parodies of recent times; and I can't put it any better than what is written on the back of the DVD...
"Adam and Joe satarise pop culture and modern life in a way you've never seen before. Unless you've seen it."
