Invest In This Set It's Worth Every Penny
Advantages: So much story and oustanding acting crammed into one boxset! Disadvantages: You won't be able to watch them just once!
...enjoyed one of the other Hornblower dvds or have read the books I would highly recommend you buy this. Set in Napoleonic times and largely on board large ships at sea, each disc has a huge amount of action and reveals a different aspect to Horatio Hornblower's (the main character) character. You can witness his development from a 17 year old who was seasick at Spithead to commander of a frigate and be with him every step of the way.
Many people ... ...especially by Ioan Gruffudd as Hornblower and Paul McGann as William Bush. Further I believe that Andrew Grieve has done a commendable job of putting them from books to screen and the portrayal is exceptional, the detail from the actors is phenomenal. Each of the episodes has its own story whilst continuing from those before so you can pick up one and watch it by itself. Each of the episodes also has supporting performances from well known stars ...

Keeps You Guessing
Advantages: See Hornblower triumph! Disadvantages: Is uncomfortable viewing whilst they're under the command of Capt.Sawyer
...Essential part of the Hornblower naval series. This is the 5th in the Hornblower series of what would best be described as nautical adventures set in the 18th-19th Centuries. The films were shown on tv before being released on DVD. Andrew Grieve does a commendable job of converting C.S.Forester's books (with a few artistic liberties of course!) to film.
This is the crucial moment for Hornblower as he faces trial at Kingston along with other members ... ...it becomes impossible for Mr Hornblower and Bush, Buckland and Kennedy to keep quiet and they do eventually hold a mutinous assembly. With Captain Sawyer's suspicions already high he quickly sends the marines to flush them out leaving them to scatter. In the process however the captain somehow falls down the hole! Noone seems to know how he 'fell' or if he was pushed.
This affords the opportunity for Buckland to take command (though, as an accurate ...

Probably My Favourite
Advantages: comedy moments aswell as the usual great acting Disadvantages: i can think of none!
...----------------------------
The third in the Hornblower series of what would best be described as nautical adventures set in the 18th-19th Centuries. The films were shown on tv before being released on DVD. Andrew Grieve does a commendable job of converting C.S.Forester's books (with a few artistic liberties of course!) to film.
This episode is one of the best of the series with a commanding supporting performance from Cherie Lunghi as the 'duchess'.
... ...Mr Kennedy (Jamie Bamber) as Hornblower and his small crew end up in a spanish prison.
As commander of the ship that was captured Hornblower is invited to dine with the Spanish leader and his french friend. This causes jealousy and resentment particularly from Mr Hobbs (who, incidentally, provides one of the comical of the series whilst back on ship) who leads his own escape attempt whilst H.H. favours waiting till Kennedy gets strong and can leave ...

Not My Favourite But Still Well Worth A Look
Advantages: See another side to Hornblower.some really nice moments. Disadvantages: Not so much sea-faring as other episodes.

The last in the Hornblower series of what would best be described as nautical adventures set in the 18th-19th Centuries. The films were shown on tv before being released on DVD. Out of the Hornblower series I have to say that this is not my favourite. This is more to do with my sympathy for H.H. ... ...story
------------------------
In this episode Hornblower is non-commisioned commander and as such on very limited pay so spends time playing whist for money. He bumps into Mr Bush (Paul McGann) and the pair are glad of each others company.
At this time Hornblower is staying in a house owned by Maria's mother. Maria grows dependent on H.H and craves his attention. This results in H.H gradually weakening and the pair marrying. If you read the books ...

Another Step In Hornblower's Naval Career
Advantages: One of the most comical epsidoes Disadvantages: None of note
...----------------------------
The second in the Hornblower series of what would best be described as nautical adventures set in the 18th-19th Centuries. The films were shown on tv before being released on DVD. I would rate this perhaps my joint favourite episode of the series along with the Duchess and the Devil. This episode ... ...--------------------------
In this episode Horatio Hornblower is trying, in the midst of his first command, to study for his examination for lieutenant (as the name suggests!). With his lack of experience and money he is a way behind the others and flounders in the exam. He is further at a disadvantage due to a previous comical encounter with Dreadnought Foster and some cattle! But circumstances eventually help him as attention is drawn from the ...
