Modern classic.

Advantages: Rousing action sequences, excellent acting, beautiful score, fast paced, gorgeous cineamtography.
Disadvantages: Graphic violence may put some off.

...to old school swords-and-sandals flicks. Gladiator is one of those rare films where all the relevant boxes are ticked: riveting action sequences, strong lead, slimy villain, wonderful supporting cast, classy period detail, gorgeous cinematography, perfect SFX, moving score and just a downright thrilling tale of a man wronged. Russell Crowe is tremendous in the role and it has rightfully made him one of cinema's biggest stars and the late Richard ...
...Ridley Scott is a master of visuals and here was the perfect opportunity in recreating a new (old) world - much in the way he does with Blade Runner he fills the screen with details that demand repeat viewings. Meanwhile the script is a surprisingly moving tale which makes the revenge all the more sweet. A modern classic. ...

Return of the Dark Knight

Advantages: Tim Burton, Michael Keaton
Disadvantages: Batman and Robin, George Clooney, Nipples on the suit!

...set contains the first 4 Batman films, and the great thing about this box set is that it is cheaper than buying the films individually, and it chronicles the change in the Batman genre, from dark and moody (Burton), to more slapstick and comic-book like (Schumacher). And so we begin with Batman (1989). This is not an origin story, like Batman Begins, instead, the film picks up with Batman already well established as a masked vigilante, putting the ...
...a bell tower showdown. Batman is a very dark affair, but watching it, even now, it's not difficult to see why this film became (at the time) one of the top 10 highest grossing films ever. Burton paints a dark, decrepit, devastating Gotham City, whilst Michael Keaton was born to play the dark knight. Jack Nicholson, as usual, steals the film with one of the great super-villain displays, as the demented Joker. Next to Batman Returns, which sees the ...

Swordfish is a hard action / thriller starring John Travolta as Gabriel Shear and Hugh Jackman as Stanley Jobson. The film depicts the story of Stanley, a top computer hacker who is soon brought under the wing of Gabriel, a violent and ruthless crime lord and not before long he is sucked into a world where he can no longer control the events that are unfolding around him. This film features a strong supporting cast including Don Cheadle as an FBI ...
...plays a simple brained hard man for a change and Sam Shepherd as a US Senator. I really liked this film a few years ago when it came out (2001) but it didn't do too well at cinema, partially because it was one of the terrorist based films that were pulled from screens after 9/11. However, I watched it again the other day and despite it still being pretty entertaining, I found it pretty laughable in some sections. Gabriel played by John Travolta plays ...

...dribbled to an end with Rocky V, but as it turns out, the old pug still has one more fight in him. Picking up in present day Philadelphia, a middle aged Rocky is now making a living running an Italian restaurant and entertaining customers with stories of his glory days. He isn't exactly a burn-out, but he's a man facing his autumn years with no real sense of purpose. Meanwhile, current heavyweight champion Mason Dixon faces growing public apathy ...
...between Dixon and an in-his-prime Rocky has Balboa come out on top. Dixon's promoters hit upon the idea of staging a one-off exhibition bout between the two men. For Rocky, it's just the opportunity he's been waiting for - a chance to exorcise his demons and prove that he can still go one more round. I must admit, I really didn't see how Stallone could make this film work with Rocky pushing sixty. Could he really pull off such a miracle? Could he ...
