Superman v evil Kryptonians
Advantages: Great cast and story Disadvantages: none
Superman 2 is a sequel to the hugely successful 1978 film, Superman. It continues the story of the superhero, Superman and his alter-ego, Clark Kent.
This film was originally directed by Richard Donner, just like the first film, but he was fired before completion of the film due to a difference of opinion and replaced by Richard Lester.
This film sees Superman (Christopher Reeve) having to defeat three Kryptonian criminals, General Zod, Ursa and ... ...in space frees them. However, Superman has given up his superpowers so that he can live as a mortal with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), who he has declared his love for. General Zod leads a trail of destruction on Earth as they use their superpowers to full effect and demand that everyone, including Superman, bow at their feet as rulers of the planet. Lex Luther (Gene Hackman) tries to get his slice of the action, by persuading General Zod that he can ...

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
Advantages: Fixes some but not all of the mistakes in the original Disadvantages: Still things left to fix for a perfect version
...Maths has finally proved Superman could NOT have saved the falling boy at Niagra Falls. He falls for 21 seconds (which is impossible as the highest part of Niagra is 170ft high). If he'd fallen on the US side he'd have been dead in just over 2 seconds. If he'd fallen on the Canadian side he'd have died in just over 5 seconds. Cut from this is where Lois jumped into the water to prove Clark is Superman. There's an added scene of dialogue between Lois ... ...Superman. (I was annoyed that Superman couldn't tell she'd fired a blank, I'm human and even I can tell the difference). An extra scene of Superman & Lois having dinner in The Fortress Of Solitude & a scene of them in bed together (Is this where the boy from Superman Returns is supposed to have been conceived?) & a chat with Brando explaining how the Molecule Chamber works to take Superman's powers. At least this version of the Molecule Chamber scene ...

Beyond the Edge of Darkness...
Advantages: An intriguing, fascinating, rather endearing piece of sword and sorcery with a wonderful soundtrack. Disadvantages: The creatures seen briefly in the haunted wood are dreadful.
...possesion of the powerful Mindsword. Hawk must bring together the 'table of five'; Gort a giant from the edge of the world, Baldun the last of the Dwarves, Crow last of the Elves and Ranulf a one handed bowman to help him rid the land of the forces of evil.
THE PRODUCTION
It may not possess the grandeur, scale and dynamics of Conan the Barbarian, but this British sword & sorcery 'epic' is fascinatingly entertaining.
The somewhat thin plot, basically ... ...between the good and rightgeous Hawk and his evil and disfigured brother Voltan, and their battle for the Mindsword.
Hawk enlists a gang of followers to aid him in his battle with Voltan's forces and the scene is set for a fight to the bitter end.
However as thin as the plot may be it couldn't be considered predictable as the story flits between set pieces and flash-backs which give a little bit of background to Hawk and Voltan's relationship. ...

Exterminate......
Advantages: Exciting, Good Guy Doing Bad Things Disadvantages: Slow In Parts
The exterminator really delivers the goods. The cover states "In war, you have to kill to stay alive..... on the streets of new york, its often the same." The film starts in the vietnam war and shows how two american soldiers, Jefferson and Eastland, escape from the V.C. Then the titles roll and it cuts to the two of them, after the war working on the docks, still looking out for other. After foiling a robbery by a gang at the docks, Jefferson is ... ...on Jeffersons attackers, but the all criminals in New York. After dropping a mobster in a mincing machine, and other violent killings, Eastland becomes known as the exterminator. But the police want Eastland in jail and the CIA want him dead..... I don't really want to give any more away, so if you want to know what happens, you'll have to watch it, you won't be dissapointed. ...

Kurosawa's Technicolor Marvel
Advantages: Like watching a moving painting made with all primary colors Disadvantages: Is only 3.5 hours long :(
...treasured addition to any collection. Kagemusha is important to any Kurosawa fan because as just about anyone should know, this is the movie that almost never was. After big moviemaking studios in Tokyo lost interest in Kurosawa's samurai style films, he was left with idle time that he was not working on film. Kagemusha was an idea that plagued him all through those years. He created massive, beautiful paintings that served as the storyboards for ... ...day, no one can view Kagemusha and NOT notice the intense, bizarre, surreal colors that nearly drip off the screen. This is a beautiful film and an important keeper for anyone who loves Kurosawa. Not to be missed or overlooked whatsoever. Also a nice "double-feature" companion piece to "Ran". ...
