Rollerball

Advantages: hmmmm
Disadvantages: the acting, the script, the special effects, the soundtrack

I brought Rollerball on DVD a couple of years ago and had never got around to watching it until today - all I can say is that i should have waited many more years. The original 1970's Rollerball is a classic, with James Caan in the lead role. The remake with Chris Klein is a poor imitation at best. Klein plays Jonathan Cross, a failed NHL player, who is inticed by Marcus Ridley (LL Cool J), by the big money available to play a new sport, Rollerball. ...
...Alexis Petrovich (Jean Reno). Rollerball takes place in an arena, where a team on rollerblades and motorbikes attempt to score against a defending team, similarly dressed. Cross is soon made aware that the sport is simply a way to get TV ratings, and take the money, via betting, from the working people. Petrovich to improve TV ratings starts inciting more and more violence into the sport. As players get injured, Ridley and Cross make a run from ...

...loved it and now own the DVD. My copy cost £7 from HMV; it is also available from Play and Amazon for around £6. The front of the DVD case looks like the photograph shown. The back has a short description of the plot and some credits. This film was produced in 1975, and this DVD version released in 2007. Plot The film is a made-for-TV movie adaption of the novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas and is set in the Napoleonic era and stars ...

Dantes is sentenced to live out his life in an isolated prison fortress, the Chateau D'If, on the island of Monte-Cristo. Dantes desire for revenge on the men who ruined his life is the only thing that can save him. It is here that he meets Abbé Faria, ...

A bit rougher than an afternoon's cricket

Advantages: Very original and thought provoking
Disadvantages: Dialogue is stifled at times

...on the short story "The Rollerball murder" by William Harrison. It is a 15+ film and rightly so as some of the scenes in the film are quite violent. The film is set in the future when hunger, greed, poverty and war have been eliminated, we are all under the control of corporations as nations no longer exist. The corporations want everyone to be the same and show Rollerball as entertainment for the masses, Rollerball is a contact sport where skating ...
...where he is. Rollerball games are regularly rigged to ensure that teams all win and no player or team becomes too popular giving the masses ideas that individuality is good, therefore everyone wins, the rise of Jonathan E threatens that equilibrium and the Corporations set out to destroy him, bribing players to hurt him and setting up a game where only player will survive with every other player determined to kill E. Jonathan has to manage this situation ...

This DVD covers the first series of The Sweeney, the great 1970's cops and robbers show where the Flying Squad's Inspector Jack Regan (the late John Thaw) and his Sergeant George Carter (Denis Waterman) spend their days chasing blaggers with shooters in souped up Granadas and Capris, shaking down a grass here and there and calling in on robber's dogs for leads. The Four Musketeers is an action/comedy film directed by Richard Lester and produced by Alexander Salkind and Pierre Spengler. It was released in 1974. It is a sequel to the 1973 film The Three Musketeers. The film is based on the second half of the Alexandre Dumas novel.
