Return of the Dark Knight

Advantages: Tim Burton, Michael Keaton
Disadvantages: Batman and Robin, George Clooney, Nipples on the suit!

...set contains the first 4 Batman films, and the great thing about this box set is that it is cheaper than buying the films individually, and it chronicles the change in the Batman genre, from dark and moody (Burton), to more slapstick and comic-book like (Schumacher). And so we begin with Batman (1989). This is not an origin story, like Batman Begins, instead, the film picks up with Batman already well established as a masked vigilante, putting the ...
...a bell tower showdown. Batman is a very dark affair, but watching it, even now, it's not difficult to see why this film became (at the time) one of the top 10 highest grossing films ever. Burton paints a dark, decrepit, devastating Gotham City, whilst Michael Keaton was born to play the dark knight. Jack Nicholson, as usual, steals the film with one of the great super-villain displays, as the demented Joker. Next to Batman Returns, which sees the ...

Ulitmate Collection for an Ultimate Super-Hero

Advantages: everything you ever wanted to know about Superman
Disadvantages: Presenation could of been better

...A Plane? .no it's the Superman ultimate Collection! Now call me a 'big kid' if you like, but I have remained a fan of the Superman stories ever since I could crawl. As a child I have watched all the Superman cartoons, brought all the comics and action figures, and owned all the movies and cartoons on tape. Even from my early teens to the present date I still enjoy the Superman series that are shown on TV:- The New Adventures Of Superman with Dean ...
...always the Superman movies I had always enjoyed the most with Christopher Reeve bringing the character to life on our big screens. There were four movies in total, but after the dire disappointment of Superman IV: Quest For Peace, the Superman franchise faded fast, and the news of Superman's main star, Christopher Reeve, being in a terrible horse riding accident which paralysed him and eventually led to his death, the Superman movie franchise almost ...

Not as brainless as punch drunk as you'd think

Advantages: Inspring action and sharp dialogue in places
Disadvantages: Shouldve skipped from IV to VI in my opinion

The Rocky films are surprisingly a sharp set of stories which are not the '80s action movie hero with boxing gloves on' that you'd expect. They have the power to inspire the mind, make you chuckle and pull on the heart strings, unlike any of his action rivals of the time. This is the reason I rate them so highly. A couple of years before the (probably) final installment of the Rocky series came in, Warner Brothers released a slick box set entitled ...
...rash, doesn't it? The Rocky Anthology consists of Rockys 1 through 5: from the gritty opener in 1976 which made Stallone his name, to the uneccessary 'V' in 1990. That makes me wonder: is there a single film out there with the roman numeral 'V' ending the title which is any good??? Rocky V is certainly no exception to the rule. However, there is some real gold amongst the 6 disks here. Especially in the early installments before the Rocky franchise ...

I was thinking... neighbourhood rules

Advantages: Hi-tech, fast-paced action sequences
Disadvantages: cliched at times, a bit predictable

The Art of War was arguably a cinematic flop a few years back but it didn't deter me from purchasing the DVD when it came out. All I had seen or heard of the film up until that point was a trailer I saw with a friend when we went to the cinema to see another film. The film stars the always cool-headed Wesley Snipes as Neil Shaw. He is both agent and weapon for the United Nations. He runs a small covert unit that doen't exist, performing operations ...
...interests for the UN in general. They use unorthodox methods to get negotiations on track and resolutions in the bag. Their latest mission involves them surveying a hopeful trade agreement between superpowers America and China. But when the Chinese ambassador is assassinated and a container full of dead Chinese refugees is found in NYC Harbour, things don't look so good. Shaw (Snipes - "Blade", "Demolition Man") is pinned down with the murder of ...

Reeve is the ONLY Superman

Advantages: exhaustive bonus material / New versions of 1 & 2.
Disadvantages: Superman IV should be thrown onto a fire

...reasons to get this: Superman the Movie (with the extra footage never before seen) and Superman II (the Richard Donner Cut). Bonus Disc: If you had a taste for watching a bit of Superman one afternoon, you won't by the end of this: It's cram-packed with all kinds of documentaries, early versions of Superman the B&W TV series (which really looks pre-historic now), and some cartoons. Enough to keep you busy all afternoon and actually be bored of ...
...Movie: The never before seen footage makes you wonder why they cut it from the original, as there are some clever special effects showing that Superman is extreme temperature resistant. Perhaps the running time was an issue, however, for one who's seen Superman a thousand times, the extra footage will not dissapoint. Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut: This is where over half the film has been remade with recently found footage that was thought ...
