Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is directed by Tom Shadyac and stars Jim Carrey and Courtney Cox. When this came out in 1994, Carrey was a virtual unknown. This film, coupled with "The Mask" and "Dumb & Dumber" propelled him to super-stardom.
Jim Carrey stars as the titular detective who is put on a case to find a missing dolphin named Snowflake; the Miami Dolphin's mascot to be more specific. Along the way, he uncovers more than he ever imagined and gets into all sorts of scrapes involving Sharks, guns and women!
This is an incredibly funny film, not just a few laugh out loud moments, but constantly funny throughout, it never lets up. Jim Carrey is absolutely perfect as Ace Ventura, his over the top facial movements and goofy demeanor suit Ace to a tee. He really gets into the character as well, when Ace is looking for Snowflake in a rich guys house, he comically sneaks around even when no-one is around to watch him, whether that was in the script or not, it's genius because it shows Ace is goofy to the core.
The script is full of witty put downs and slapstick comedy for Carrey, it's a delicate balance of childish, immature jokes but written very intelligently. His OTT antics are a joy to watch and it is a great film to put you in a happy mood. Everyone else acts well but Carrey is the real star here. At one point he is put in a mental institution and you think to yourself that he would fit in pretty well there! He is a pet detective for one reason though: he loves animals. He can't stand cruelty of any kind and gets very worked up about it. Even when a police officer stamps on a bug he gets angry, but composes himself enough to insult the guy brilliantly, and when he takes a swing at him, Ace shows he has the moves as well!
Overall one of the funniest films I have ever seen, I could watch it again and again and not find it boring. Highly recommended for anyone who wants/needs a laugh, you will not be disappointed! Easily five stars.

Advantages: Carrey is funny, pulling great jokes off perfectly, assisted by able actors intensifying the silliness of Ventura. Hee hee Disadvantages: ventura can be seen as a tad weak, but if he was serious atall then it owuld ruin the plot, a point especially clear in a scene with Cox where his "serious" side comes out
