This one is old, but if you like Jim Carey at his juvenile best, making fun of people when they aren't looking and acting a fool but coming off with hilarious and actually quite intelligent remarks, you'll simply love this.
The script is well written, and the one-liners keep you laughing from beginning to end. It is one of those movies with a plot written for children, but with jokes that the older you are the more you get them, and they are brilliant. If you are a student like me, and you watch it with your friends, I guarantee that you will hear the words "alrighty then" more than once over the following weeks. It will make things seem funny in everyday life, because they remind you of the movie, kind of like Dumb and Dumber does.
I appreciate that some people don't find Jim funny, and if you don't like his kind of humour, then it is a guarantee you won't like this, but if you're like me and find it funny when someone falls over in public then it should be added to your collection as soon as possible. While your at it you should get the sequel, which is just as funny and I usually watch them back to back, which proves the theory that simple minds are easily amused. The jokes are similar, but different enough and in enough quantity that you find them funny every time. Kind of like when you watch the Simpsons, everyone has seen almost every episode, but you still can't wait till 7pm for it to start each day.
If you want to know a bit about the plot then read on, it won't spoil anything as it isn't very good, and doesn't need to be. Jim Carey is a pet detective who is hired to find the Miami Dolphins missing mascot, a dolphin. The search becomes more complicated, but Carey is actually extremely good at his job, and regularly finds clues and notices things the police have missed. The search finds him romantically involved with Courtney Cox, the other main star in the movie, and ultimately rescuing the Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino from an untimely death.
Of course he solves the case, and the movie has an amusing ending, and actually if I was younger I would find the movie not just funny but interesting. Ok, I admit it, I enjoyed the plot too, but that just means that children of 10 and under would think this is a great movie too.
If you watch it and like it, get Ace Ventura 'When Nature Calls' next, and you could try any of the following movies as Carey is my comedy role model and I think these are his best other comedy flicks. 'Dumb and Dumber', 'The Cable Guy', and slightly less funny, 'Liar, Liar', and 'The Mask'.

Advantages: Carrey is funny, pulling great jokes off perfectly, assisted by able actors intensifying the silliness of Ventura. Hee hee Disadvantages: ventura can be seen as a tad weak, but if he was serious atall then it owuld ruin the plot, a point especially clear in a scene with Cox where his "serious" side comes out
