sketch on the French and Saunders Show, Jennifer Saunders saw its potential and created one of the most ground-breaking and debauched comedies on British TV. Centred around the hip London fashion scene the series follows Edina (Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley), two women who refuse to grow up and are constantly on a mission to lose weight, gorging themselves with cocaine and/or champagne, endlessly throwing parties (or throwing up at parties), and sporting outrageous outfits, which were the height of fashion at the time--honestly sweetie! The superb comic performances reinvented the careers of Joanna Lumley and June Whitfield. Saunders meanwhile secured her status as one of Britain's top female comedians. Although its consciously chic clothing looks a little dated now, its mad characterisations endure and the jokes remain as hilariously slick and apt as ever. On the DVD: Absolutely Fabulous DVD box set comes beautifully packaged in mock velvet, with each series individually packaged inside. The original sketch from the French and Saunders Show and the pilot episode, "Mirrorball", offers all you need to understand the show's origins The commentary with Jennifer Saunders and John Ploughman on Series 4 is refreshing, owning up to the mistakes they made and the jokes that didn't work. The outtakes are funnier than the usual Hollywood blips. The 4:3 transfer is standard for a television comedy. --Nikki Disney
Advantages: Hilarious performances! Disadvantages: No behind the scenes documentaries or commentaries
Absolutely Fabulous is a brilliant comedy written by the comedy genius that is Jennifer Saunders. The characters within this comedy are Eddy and best friend Patsy, two women who are addicted to fame, fashion, weight, and drugs. They are both always trying to keep up with the latest trends, but do so badly (especially Eddy). Eddy's daughter Saffy is the voice of reason within the household, and is he most normal character in the show, regularly judging ... ...and Saffy shouting hilarious insults at each other! The other main characters are Mrs Monsoon, Eddy's strangely pleasant mum and Bubble, Eddy's incompetent PA, I love both of these characters and neither are in it enough for my liking!
This DVD features the six episodes of the first series, they are:
Fashion- Eddy has to put on a celebrity fashion show, but it's not as easy as she thinks…
Fat- Eddy becomes obsessed with losing weight ...

DVD Description
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, quite possibly the best British comedy series since MONTY PYTHON or, at least, THE YOUNG ONES, centers on the exploits of Edina (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley), two middle-aged women trying to relive the glory of their youth. The catch here is that these two women unabashedly drink (Patsy's had a stomach bypass and consumes only alcohol), take drugs, and generally walk around in a stupor while abusing Edina's earnest daughter, Saffron (Julia Sawalha), and her assistant Bubble (Jane Horrocks). Probably the best sitcom of the 1990s, AB FAB's only fault is that it lasted a mere 18 episodes. This DVD set contains the six episodes that comprised the show's first season: "Fashion," "Fat," "France," "Iso Tank," "Birthday," and "Magazine."
