Clint Eastwood returns as an actor and director on another thriller regarding shady going ons in the whitehouse. He plays retired jewel thief luther Whitney who plans one last heist at the home of a weathly businessman.Unknown to him the wife of the businessman also uses the home as a place to carry on a affair with the President himself played with steely resolve by Gene hackman. On a planned Luther is interupted by the unexpected arrival of the president and his mistress. He hides in a secret window compartment and then watches in horror as the president accidentally kills his mistress. The secret service rush onto the scene and then a big cover up begins to protect the president. On departing they realise someone else has observed what has happened by which time luther has already planned his exit. Thus begins a game of cat and mouse as the president plans to kill luther to protect his secret.
Eastwood has brought togther a very strong cast of excellent actors.Gene hackman can do menace in his sleep and he is perfect as the shady and flawed president.Australian actress Judy Davis is also very good as the head of the secret service ,biting one moment and then vunerable the next. She is one person you do not want to mess with.Scott Glenn and Dennis Haysbert are convincing as the two secret service agents sent to wipe out eastwood.Ed harris as the cop on the case and laura ginney as luthers daughter also turn in decent performances.Eastwood himself does an efficent job as director but looks way too old to convince even as a retired jewel thief, and this undermines the film slightly.
The film suffers from uneven pacing, the first half is strong with characters coming too the fore, but the second half is a mess with the chase element taking centre stage.Standout scenes are the quiet moments between luther and his daughter and the tense verbal sparring of the president and judy davis. The ending is especially weak showing a surprising lack of tension and gives a feeling of anticlimax.
Overall absloute power is watchable though it could have been a lot better. Its not in the same class as eastwoods earlier in the line of fire which has a better storyline and mixes action and acting perfectly
