This is really a vehicle for Clint Eastwood to show that despite his veteran status he can still cut the mustard. He plays the master thief who unwittingly stumbles upon on the President of the United States rough sex encounter with the wife of his best friend.She winds uf dead murdered by the Secret service and witnessed by Eastwood.What follows is Eastwood's cat and mouse game with the President and his agents. Clearly exploiting contemporary political foibles to the full, the plot does work and the tension is kept up throughout largely due to excellent performances from Gene Hackman as the immoral President and Ed Harris as the cop with integrity. There is also a useful subplot between Eastwood and Laura Dern who plays his daughter. Thankfully, we are spared any unrealistic love interest subplot.
