above the rims show the life of a big headed basketball player (Kyle) who espires to play in the NBA. it also shows the life of his mother, flip (a local tramp) and shep (a man with a trouble past)
We see in the opening scene Shep and his best friend playing a late night one-on-one basketball game, in which they make a bet which is the cause of his freinds death. This episode sticks with Shep throughout the film, causing the audience to question whose story this is. At times, it's quite obviously Kyle's. At others, it seems to be Shep's. In the end, it appears that both characters have shared the film. Shep is forced to face his past while paralleling the potentially catastrophic downfall of Kyle's career.
The character relationships are very complex and somewhat diverse. Shep has come back to his hometown to visit his dead mothers grave for her birthday. whilst in his home town Shep meet and begins to fancy Kyle's mother. Birdie (played by tupac) is Shep's brother and belives that shep should not of given up on his dream of becoming a pro basketball player, Birdie is also angry at his brother for running away from all his problems and not being there through the hard times and when his mother died. at the same time, Shep blames himself for his friend's death and regrets that he couldn't have made better decisions.
