ANALYSIS
This is a real all American 80s humorous drama full of clichés of that era. The clothing, the nightlife, the music, the attitudes, all merge together to make this a somewhat enjoyable and rather nostalgic film.
To be honest, I can't say that I particularly empathized with any of the main characters and just wanted to tell them to GROW UP. I like to think I'm fairly independent in my decisions about my love life and somewhat cringed at the thought of being swayed in important decisions by well meaning friends, sometimes with ulterior motives. The film does go some way to prove to us women how much pressure men get from their single pals to stay "young, free and single" and to show men how women try to impress upon their friends that "he's just not good enough for you".
I wonder if we've all been at a stage when we were still single (or maybe still are) and our closest friends were going in the direction of a long term relationship which caused some element of jealousy at our best friend being "stolen" from us? I've experienced this sort of behavior first hand when the best friend of a former partner went out of his way to impress upon my fella just how much he'd be missing out on picking up new girls every night; luckily the ploy didn't work (mostly because it was plainly obvious that he was more worried about losing his free lift home every time he went out drinking), but as we're no longer together, maybe it would have been better had the ploy have worked back then!
Moore looked stunning in this film, which was one of her very earlier roles and carried off her role really well within the realms of her character. Lowe did a great job in his role, both sexy and sensitive to some extent and was very tasty to look at too; although his acting here wasn't his best! Belushi was actually quite hilarious (although personally I can find him rather annoying sometimes in other films) as Lowe's best friend and flat-mate continually trying to put a fly in the ointment and Perkins was more than adequate in her role as Moore's best mate and flat-mate. Mullally was funny in her role as Moore's "other" best friend (it was weird seeing her in this film after having seen her so often in Will and Grace).
Having lots of 80s tunes in the film I thought it worth mentioning that some of the singers/songs included Sheena Easton - "So Far, So Good" and "Natural Love", John Oates "Shape of Things to Come", Jermaine Jackson - "Words into Action" and John Waite - "If Anybody Had a Heart", even more nostalgia for those of us that grew up in that era!
OVERALL
Overall I'd give the film a reasonable 7 out of 10. For 80s nostalgia it was enjoyable, for the music it was enjoyable but don't expect to like the characters too much and don't expect a deep and meaningful story.

Advantages: Two of the best Brat Pack movies ever, plus an extra Disadvantages: Could have chosen a better third movie
, legend has it that St Elmo's Fire is electrical lightning flashes in the sky that ancient mariners used to guide their way and saw as a sign of protection. The fire created in this film is Demi's characters way of protecting herself from circumstances - the fire doesn't exist, she just needs something to believe in and give her a reason for the way she is feeling.
AboutLastNight is ok, but the weakest of the three films. Pretty in Pink would have been a better addition if not the Outsiders.

Advantages: A fab film, great price, one I can re watch over and over! Disadvantages: Not a one!!!!
I bought this DVD for my husband for Christmas, just as a little stocking filler. I had heard about the film, but never watched it, and lastnight was actually the first time since Christmas we'd had the time to sit down and watch it!
The film is about Leonard Shelby, a middle aged man whose wife has been raped and murdered, leaving Leonard with a memory condition which means he cannot hold short term memories, and anything that has happened after his wifes murder, he cannot recall.
Leonard takes polaroid pictures and and makes notes about everything and everybody who he meets, so that he can look back at these and know what to think of the people! He tatoos notes to his body to remind him of facts, facts about his wifes killer.
The film is very weird in that it works backwards, it starts at the end of the story and works its ...

Lastnight my dad and me decided it was about high time we plodded through a few of the DVD's that we have purchased but yet to watch. After debating over which one it should be however we eventually settled on Ned Kelly, shoved it in the player and sat back to watch. Now vaguely remembering watching this film before I knew it was going to be good but my dad, not really being a fan of 'modern films' as he puts it wasn't exactly expecting much. I am pleased to say however that once again daughters film choice prevailed and even he had to admit that it was pretty damn good.
The DVD itself contains a plethora of special features which include a discussion of the myth surrounding Ned Kelly a documentary on the real Ned Kelly, trailors, storyboards and poster concepts. All of these features are interesting to watch, especially ...

DVD Description
Danny (Rob Lowe) and Debbie (Demi Moore) are in love--on a strictly casual basis--in this sexy comedy. Based on David Mamet's stage play SEXUAL PERVERSITY IN CHICAGO, director Edward Zwick's ABOUT LAST NIGHT... is a funny, provocative, and often insightful look at young romance in the 1980s. At a neighborhood bar, Danny, a swinging single, meets Debbie, a bright young advertising executive who happens to be sleeping with her boss. Sparks fly, and the pair go home together to enjoy what they think is going to be a meaningless night of sex, preferring casual sex to commitment. Danny and Debbie both enjoy their own freedom, work, and friendships. Debbie relies on the support of her roommate, Joan (Elizabeth Perkins in her film debut), a cynical kindergarten teacher, while Danny is constantly exchanging dirty stories and work anecdotes with his coworker and best friend, Bernie (James Belushi). Although they desire to keep their independence, Danny and Debbie begin spending more and more time with each other and finally end up moving in together, quickly becoming domesticated in spite of their fears. However, their whirlwind romance gets the better of them and, although they have strong feelings for one another, they break up. Emotionally devastated, they both attempt to move on while realizing that they may have had something more important than their supposed freedom. This in-depth look at the difficulties of modern relationships is insightful and sexy, featuring palpable chemistry between the two seductive stars.
