Brief history lesson: William Alexander “Bud” Abbott (born 1895, died 1974) and Lou Costello (born 1906, died 1959) formally teamed up in 1936 and went on to make films such as ‘Buck Privates’ and the aforementioned ‘Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.’ They made over 30 films together, but as the years went on their relationship became a bit ‘frosty.’
‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ was made in 1952 and also starred Dorothy Ford and James Alexander. It is not a long film – around 78 minutes. It has a typical fairytale film beginning, showing an old book opening to reveal the cast and crew – just how many times has that been done before and since this, I wonder? Jack (Costello) gets a job babysitting a young prodigy-cum-brat, and Abbott plays his manager...

Advantages: Classic Oldie Disadvantages: dated Gags and Humour

Saw this film just before Christmas; I remember how much I used to laugh whenever I saw Abbott and Costello on the television when I was younger,
So for £4.99 I thought, what a bargain.
Bar of Chocolate, bag of crisps, and a mug of tea, I was sorted, ready for a good nights viewing of laughter.
Well to be brutally honest, I cant remember laughing once, It was nothing that the guys were doing different or wrong, the routine was just as I remember it to be, but I know longer found them funny at all.
In fact I was quite shocked at how badly Budd seemed to treat Lou, I felt really sorry for the little guy.
The story is basically as we all know it, but in this film, it starts as Jack is baby sitting young Donald, he reads him the story of 'Jack and the Beanstalk' to help settle him down...

Advantages: Something for everyone Disadvantages: No special features
...of the many films that Russell Crowe appeared in before he hit the big time with "Gladiator" and although this was never a huge hit, it is still a very good film. It has mixture of comedy, romance, drama and of course ice hockey, but for anyone who is not keen on sports movies don't be put off, as the film does not actually dwell on the games for too long. The storyline is very good as it is multi-levelled, the main story is the town's folk belief in the team, but there is also the story on one man trying to prove himself to his father, and another man realising that although his wife loves him, perhaps the little town of Alaska doesn't have enough to keep her happy. There is a story line in this film for nearly everyone who watches it, and it does a very good job of not spreading itself too thinly between the.
