This film is based on the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks. It has been turned more into a teen movie but this doesn't mean it is cheesy in any way, it is very mature and the book couldn't have been brought to life any better. The reason many critics were unsure of what to expect from this film is because this is Mandy Moore's firsty try at acting. After the other failures from Britney Spears and Beyonce Knowles, Mandy shows she can be brilliant at acting and singing.
Mandy does not look glamorous in this film she wears no make-up and looks plain which shows she is wanting to be more known for her acting. Shane West is another excellent actor in this film. He has been in Get Over It and is currenty filming The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Sean Connery. This is a different part for him even though it is a teen movie. He plays the nice guy and shows how brilliant he can be. Peter Coyote and Daryl Hannah also do a great job as being parents of both teenagers. With a great cast does the film live up to what you would expect? Yes it is a brilliant and lovely teen romance with a lot of feeling and emotion.
The film doesn't start off brilliantly but there is a reason why the beginning scenes are there. Landon Carter gets cuaght when his friends tell a boy to jump off some scaffolding into water. Clay Gheppard, the boy who jumps gets hurt and police get near the scene. Clay jumped because he had to if he wanted to be part of Landon's gang. No one is meant to be where they are so they help Clay out of the water and leave Landon. Landon is caught and then punished at school. He is a rich kid, popular and in with a bad crowd, not so much bad but not a good infuence on him. He has to help the janitor with duties, help tutor kids at the weekend and also take part in the school play, not things he wants to do but has to.
Jamie Sullivan is the quiet, well behaved girl and daughter of the Reverand. She doesn't have a lot of friend but she gets on well with some unpopular people.
Jamie and Landon get to know eachother by practice for the school play. Landon is nasty to Jamie at first when she approaches but then when he needs help with his lines he is ok to talk to her.
At school Landon is mean to Jamie when she talks to him about him going over to her house to practice lines. When he comes over to her house later she handles the situation well. When the play finally has its open night everything goes well. Landon's feelings for Jamie all start to get to him and he realises he really likes her. Jamie has her hair, make-up and clothes done nicely and Landon is stunned at how beautiful she looks. From then on the two fall in love and the relationship develops into a beautiful romance acted well. When watching this film I was really emotional and Jamie's character touched me. She has never had anyone pay attention to her but still seems so strong, puts on a happy face and makes everything seem ok.
Jamie's father is not too happy about Landon getting close to his daughter but still he sees how Jamie has changed him into a better person.
I love this film and it is so tragic but brilliant. A very nice film which never bores me. It shows how two people from different backgrounds can fall in love and how one person can change someone for the better. Anyone who loves a great film has to see this!
