A town called Eureka (or just Eureka, as it was broadcast in the states, for all you region 1 dvd hunters) tells the story of US marshall Jack Carter, who is your stereotypical average Joe (so average, I'm surprised they didn't actually call him Joe and have done with it).
Jack stumbles into the town of Eureka and very quickly gets caught up in a incident which leaves time flowing backwards. Eureka is not so much a town but a government facility where all the smartest people in the country live and invent... stuff. It just so happens that Eureka needs a new Sherrif, and Jack thanks to his demonstrations of lateral thinking gets the job.
By the end of the double episode pilot the show was asking the viewer to ignore what quickly turned into a string vest of a plot, but it somehow pulls it off- the writing is big on ideas, even if it is a little unsure of how to put them together.
This is not a programme to be taken seriously, it is a comedy show and a smart one at that- Sherriff Carter is supported by a cast of crazy geniuses, including his neurotic house, the obligatory love interest, and his rebellious teenage daughter. Between them they get into all sorts of wacky situations that in reality would never happen at a top secret government controlled town, but there you go- it wouldn't be funny if there was nothing odd going on.
There is a story arc, but it is so big that it seems a optional extra in this first season. Suffice to say all is not as it seems, and some of the accidents aren't so accidental...
Summary: If desperate housewives were all geniuses, there woud be no need for eureka
