DVD Description
Tony Richardson continued in the vein of kitchen-sink realism with this adaptation of Shelagh Delaney's novel of working-class life. Set in England in the early 1960s, A TASTE OF HONEY stars Rita Tushingham as the waifish Jo, a plain 17-year-old girl who is dragged from one shabby bed-sitter to another by Helen (Dora Bryan), her promiscuous, alcoholic termagant of a mother. When Helen and her current lover, Peter (Robert Stephens), take a holiday in Blackpool, Jo goes along and, while walking on the beach, meets Jimmy (Paul Danquah), a black sailor on leave. After they spend the night together Jimmy's ship leaves for points unknown. Helen and Peter have impulsively decided to marry, and they move into his flat, leaving Jo in the cold. She gets a job in a shoe store, where she meets gay and mild-mannered Geoffrey, and the two decide to move into a flat together. Jo soon discovers she's carrying Jimmy's child, news that depresses her. But Geoffrey couldn't be happier, and he begins knitting baby clothes, goes to a clinic for child-care instruction, and even offers to marry Jo. This moving film is exceptionally well acted and directed; it is a tribute to Richardson's boldness in taking on the theme of miscegenation, then a much more controversial issue.

Killswitch Engage - "A Bid Farewell", "The End Of Heartache"
A Static Lullaby - "Lip Gloss and Letdown", "The Shooting Star That Destroyed Us"

Advantages: Modern music and some good dance moves Disadvantages: The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence
...Universal Pictures presents this production of “Honey”. It is appropriately rated PG within the Drama and Romance genre, but don’t let this put you off, this is definitely a film for the whole family. The film features Jessica Alba, Lil’ Romeo, Missy Elliot, Mekhi Phifer and Joy Bryant; which includes some of our top well-known names in the film and music industry. Jessica Alba is the star of the show, who plays Honey Daniels.
From early on in the film, we see that Honey is a good-natured and caring young woman. At the age of twenty-two, she lives at her family home with both her parents and has a very active life in the community. Her drive for ambition, pushes her to do everything she can to further her career. As a result, she has to be very organised to take control of her hectic life and juggle her three job commitments...

Opinion of film
This film is way too sweet for my taste, but I think teenagers who love dance and R&B music may enjoy it well enough. Jessica Alba (Honey), who formerly starred as Max in the TV series Dark Angel, is very glamorous and looks the part. The fairytale nature of the movie makes for a somewhat weak script and characters are rather thin. I was very impressed by the performances of the youngest actors Lil' Romeo (Benny) and Zachary Williams (Raymond). The dancing, especially with the youngsters, is very entertaining, and soundtrack is enjoyable. There are cameo appearances from Missy Elliot and other famous hip-hop and R&B musicians. My rating for the main feature is 6 out of 10.
