Are you not scared (yet) at the idea of looking under your kitchen sink?
Then, A Tale of Two Sisters is for you!
The story ***********************************************
I don't want to get into too much detail, as I believe that horror films are far scarier when one doesn't know the story. In a few words, Su-Mi and Su-Yeon are two sisters (no kidding!), who return to their family home to live with their dad, Mu-Hyun, and his new wife Iun Joo. From the first moments, tensions build up between Su-Mi and her step mum, as a series of strange events is about to occur.
The film is Certificate 15.
It was directed in 2002 by Korean director par Kim Jee-Woon.
The older sister is played by Im Soo-Jung. I think she fits the role perfectly. The younger sister is played by Moon-Geun-Young.
My opinion about the film ********************************************
It's really hard to tell, as I am torn between two feelings.
Starting with the good bit, as a horror film, "A Tale of Two Sisters" is unbelievably scary.
Despite a slow start, terror builds up slowly. I can seriously tell that this is one of the most frightening films I have ever watched. A very shocking part was the fact there was no music during scary scenes: I couldn't believe how terrifying that was! It is a hard thing to describe, but I think it made me feel as if I were in the characters' place. If I were to look under my sink to check if there was a ghost hiding there, no music would play in the background. Everything would just be dead silent, and the only thing I would hear would be my racing heart beats… In this way, I could really relate to the characters.
Besides, music sometimes guides you to what is going to happen. But without music, you don't get any clues, and when something unexpected happens, you find yourself jumping even more.
I was absolutely terrified when I watched those scenes, holding my breath, squeezing my boyfriend's hand, praying for the film to finish. .. but loving it!
However, despite all that, I was very disappointed by the story. In fact, throughout the film, there is a real mystery to be solved. I knew at all times that something was wrong, but was unable to put my finger on it . I just couldn't wait to know, hoping that if I got an answer, I would manage to sleep later on.
Then, after a few good twists, when I thought the film would end and leave me shaking like a leaf in my bed, the story carried on with some very confusing flashbacks. Eventually, when it all ended, I was as confused as one can possibly be. .. and more frustrated and angry than terrified. I tried to understand everything via all means, discussing the key scenes with my boyfriend and looking at forums on the internet, but no one actually seems to agree on a clear and solid explanation, which inevitably makes me think that the director himself doesn't know.
I was seriously disappointed that such a scary film failed in being excellent, by being unable to provide a good explanation. That is, to me, a real shame.
However, if you like horror films, I would still highly recommend it. You might understand most of it or make up your own theory to explain the ending. Otherwise, you will still jump and shake, maybe pray, but most of all, enjoy yourself too.

I thought this an excellent film and it’s complexity adds to it, it has to be watched a few times for you to pick up on all the subtleties presented to you. It’s a film that begs to be discussed after viewing it, as different people would have seen and do see different things which lead to their own conclusions about the film. I don’t know how many times you have watched it but I would say you need to see it at least 3 times and knowing the ending doesn’t spoil it as the content is so rich. The reason for a helpful instead of a very helpful is because I think you could have said more about the story it’s self without giving it away..

Advantages: Some excellent scenes that aren't likely to leave you any time soon. Disadvantages: An unsatisfactory ending - even by horror film standards!
