***INTRO***
A British comedy written by Alan Bennett produced now for DVD mine came as a free gift with the Times. Stars include Michael Palin as Gilbert Chilvers, Maggie Smith as his social climbing wife Joyce and Denholm Elliot as the Doctor. Rated 15 and suitable for people of 15 years and over. Music by John Du Prez. The production of the film includes executives George Harrison (ex Beatle) and Dennis O'Brien. Directed by Malcolm Mowbray.
***THE STORY***
This vicious, tasteless satirical British comedy is set in 1947 Britain when post war privation still meant rationing. Gilbert Chivers a podiatrist & his wife Joyce move to a new area and increasingly become involved in black market doings. Ham is still contraband due to a shortage of supplies. The town big wigs including the Doctor (Elliot) have enticed a farmer to fatten up an unlicensed pig, Joyce persuades Gilbert to kidnap the animal, and mayhem ensues.
***THE CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE***
The film is very British and not very stunning visually aside from being a hilariously funny film I think it has value as a documentary on life in early post-war England. Illustrating examples of rationing and scarce food, urban & rural life, High street retailing, clothes and furniture. The music is not noteworthy and pales by comparison to Alan Bennett's script.
***MY OPINION***
My copy came free with the Times on Sunday, it's worth paying for if your library has not got a copy ask them to order 1. It takes a little time for the film to gather momentum; it's that sort of story. The act relating the experience of the pig with diarrhoea is hilariously funny. From then on it gets better. Michael Palin as Chilvers is excellent. You could watch this film in the morning and still laugh.
