audiences with her sophisticated renditions of jazz/blues standards and torch songs for a decade now. Half The Perfect World differs from previous albums Dreamland and Careless Love in that Peyroux covers songwriters from recent times, rather than those of yesteryear. Not only that, but she has also included more of her own compositions -- four in total -- penned with long-time collaborator/producer Larry Klein. It's her own "It's All Right" (which also has writing credits from Steely Dan's Walter Becker) that gets the album off to an infectious and insouciant start. Backed by musicians Sam Yahel (Norah Jones, Bill Frisell), David Piltch (Holly Cole), Jay Bellerose and drummer Scott Amendola, amongst others, Peyroux then proceeds to take us through a smoky, emotive world of romance, eroticism and heartbreak populated by re-interpretations of classics like Joni Mitchell's "River" (a duet with k.d. lang), Tom Waits' "The Heart Of Saturday Night", Leonard Cohen's "Blue Alert" -- even Charlie Chaplin's "Smile". A string-laden version of Serge Gainsbourg's "La Javanaise" provides the anticipated French touch, while the remainder of Peyroux's own songs, in particular the heartfelt "California Rain" and the poignant "Once in a While", stand up surprisingly well next to the rest of the material.--Paul Sullivan

with, but of the singers I recognised there was Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Rod Stewart, Led Zeppelin, Elton John and David Bowie.
Many of the great lines in the film belong to Frances McDormand, and although her performance as the overprotective mother is fantastic, in my opinion Mr Hoffman acts everyone else off the screen - he's a hugely underated actor who can turn himself to just about any role (who amongst us can forget the 'shart' scene in another of his films?). Here he plays a world weary, razzled journalist who's been there, done that and got the t-shirt. A special mention should also be made of Patrick Fugit, who's first role this was, and who manages to capture the emotion of qawky teenage kid caught between a fuddy duddy mum and the world of uber-cool rock stars and their hangers-on perfectly. You can't help feeling ...

this movie. We find out a lot about what women don't want rather than what they actually want.
While watching this film I kept thinking of all the real life men who have wanted to know what women want ; I'm sure they would be beginning for this 'talent'. If Nick's character was a real person , I'm sure every guy in the world would be queuing up to be his friend.
If your planning a night in with a DVD , this is perfect. ...

DVD Description
Set in Texas in 1963, Clint Eastwood's film is a subtle and haunting work that features what is perhaps Kevin Costner's best performance. Costner plays against type as Butch Haynes, an escaped convict whose tendency toward violence is masked by his affability. Haynes escapes with a more blatantly dangerous convict, Terry Pugh (Keith Szarabajka), planning to ditch him as soon as they cross the border. But Pugh's lack of self-control gets them in trouble, and they take a young boy hostage. Raised by his single mother, a Jehovah's Witness, Phillip Perry (T.J. Lowther, in a heartbreakingly real performance) is fascinated by Haynes's roughneck ways, and the two form a surprisingly strong bond. Eastwood takes a supporting role as Red Garnett, the lawman who, ineptly but inevitably, is closing in on Haynes. With a woman criminologist (Laura Dern) and a trigger-happy federal agent along for the ride, Garnett chases Haynes down while keeping their shared past a secret from his team.
