...even though the film is a certificate 18. From what I could gather back then, from the way that kids were trying to scare the hell out of each other while re-telling bits of the movie,Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) was a very bad and scary character from a horror movie which it seemed only the 'cool' kids of the class were either allowed to have seen or were brave enough to watch sneekily behind their parents backs.
I however, being ... ...a movie rated 'PG' sneekily behind my parents back just incase it had a bad word or mild violence etc ... was not ever gonna get near a movie like this , and to be honest, all the other kids talking about _'A Nightmare on Elm Street'_ probably scared me enough into not wanting to see it back then at age 10.

First time I heard that rhyme, I must have been about 10 years old and in the school playground. It was very popular with kids at the time, even though the film is a certificate 18.
I however, being the sort of kid that would have to watch a movie rated 'PG' sneekily behind my parents back just incase it had a bad word or mild violence etc ... was not ever gonna get near a movie like this , and to be honest, all the other kids talking about 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' probably scared me enough into not wanting to see it back then at age 10.
I spotted this Brand New 2 disc special edition on eBay for £2.99, so of course I snapped it up. So finally at age 29 I was able to see this movie for the first time.
For some reason I had it in my mind that this film was out nearer 1990 then in 1984! But as soon as I started viewing it was so obviously an 80's movie. What with the 80's scary synth music and shaky camera angles ,and of course the fashion and the film set. But for me none of this made me like the movie any less. In fact I think I liked it more for being so typical of its time. This movie is a teen slasher type of movie. so ,for people who like films like scream and urban legend and haven't yet seen this movie, I think this would be suited to them or you. As well as people who are fans of the horror genre in general of course. This movie is directed by Wes Craven
The Story
Tina and Nancy are teenaged best friends living on Elm street. Straight off the film shows Tina is having horrible nightmare's involving a gruesome looking character and it is pretty soon after the Nightmare's begin that Tina gets murdered(that scene is not one for the faint hearted). The finger is pointed at the person she was last seen with, but all to soon after Tina's death, best friend Nancy starts to experience the same terrible nightmares and from what Nancy can gather they involve the same gruesome monster type being. Slowly Nancy puts two and two together and tries to make sense of things. Johnny Depp Plays Glen the boyfriend of Nancy in this movie(So this is a pretty early performance from him here -if not the first). Nancy meanwhile struggles with getting anyone to listen to her and the theories she has made, and Nancy's Mum is beginning to get in the way of her plan to try and solve the mystery . However, Nancy's mum does hold some information as to the possible identity of this Nightmare stalking fiend and it is only on learning this information that He becomes known as Freddy Kruegar(or Fred Kruegar to be more precise). Nancy knows enough quite quickly to know that she can't let herself go to sleep. That's because it is only during her sleep that Freddy Kruegar comes to life and is at his most gruesome and dangerous. Nancy finally convinces her boyfriend to help her to end the Nightmare once and for all ,but does she really know what she is doing and will she be able to prevent Freddy from ever killing again?
Should You Watch it?
If you are a fan of classic horrors then i'd say -''why haven't you already seen this?'' I recommend this movie and although it is very far from reality it is a clever story line and will leave you wondering by the end. I think the story is really original. However, I didn't really get too scared watching it.That said there were definitely moments that made me jump, and a few times I had to look away as it did get quite gruesome in parts. It definitely has the ability to scare but even more so if you are the type to scare quite easily. I think the special effects were pretty good for this movie especially as it was made in the 80's. Although overall it is quite dated I still thought that it was a fantastic horror movie..
I Recommend this Movie

A nightmare on elm street was originally released in 1984 and after the same 6 years (since Halloween in 1978) of the same masked-psycho-stalks-then-kills boring, uninentive and unscary formula this was a refreshing, imaginative and terrifying treat for horror movie goers world-wide. It has become a classic and rightly so...It launched New Line Cinema and the career of Director Wes Craven. Now, it's time to relive ... ...having terrible nightmares in which a man with ''a burned face, dirty red and green sweater and knives for fingers'' is stalking her. She doesn't know who he is or why he's after her. Terrified of sleeping alone whilst her mother is away for the weekend she invites her friends, Nancy (Heather Langenkamp), Glen (Johnny Depp) and her boyfriend Rod (Nick Corri) over to stay for the night to keep her company. Whilst discussing Tina's dreams they realise ...

A hellish, razor-fingered monster enters the dreams of the teenage residents of a bucolic town and systematically slaughters them in their sleep - until one courageous young woman does battle with the predatory fiend. An excellent, surprisingly surrealistic film from the master, Wes Craven.
