Hopkins (Lost in Space ) applying something approaching brilliance to a script (partly by horror novelists John Skipp and Craig Spector) that falls apart under the light. Among the impressive horror-weird sequences include a boy being absorbed by a motorbike or the characters straying into a superhero comic, but it still has boring Freddy wisecracks, a parade of indistinguishable and annoying teenage cannon fodder, an incomprehensible premise about the dreams of an unborn baby and lots of pompous would-be scariness to drag it down into the morass. Lisa Wilcox returns, but there's no particular reason to be excited about that. -- Kim Newman

Advantages: Great directing, decent acting, gory if viewing the unrated version Disadvantages: Freddy’s still trying to be funny, the rated version Is ow on the gore, not all of the acting is exceptional
...elements gained, the film as a whole is much more likeable and has turned into one of the sequels that I don’t mind watching. Unlike “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare,” the supposedly “last” film in the series, the film take itself a little more seriously. The dark, gloomy look of “The Dream Child” gives the audience a precedence of atmosphere that the “Nightmare On Elm Street” sequels lacked. Although Freddy is still a jokester and you’ll laugh ... ...worst and it actually provides a good time for yours truly whenever I decide to watch it.
The plot is much more original; it’s unarguably the most original throughout any of the sequels. Instead of relying on the plot thread of Freddy using a victim’s dreams to claim souls, we get a more complex idea.
For this entry, Alice (Lisa Wilcox) and a new group of friends have just graduated high school. Starting with this, it’s a nice detail that means ...

The Dream Child Review ofA Nightmare On Elm Street 5 - The Dream Child DVDby

Advantages: More of Krueger's wit and style Disadvantages: Less deaths
...was safe, but Freddy's got a new plan! Alice is pregnant and Freddy has found a way into the unborn baby's dreams. Freddy will be reborn through the child if Alice cannot stop him! To do this she must enlist the help of Freddy's dead nun mother? Strange. There is a lower body count in this film than in 3 or 4, which only goes to work to it's disadvantage. By this stage I was only watching the films to see how Freddy was going to deal with his victims! ...

Advantages: Better characterisation, some good deaths, good performances. Disadvantages: Still a few plot holes, takes a while to get started.
...CRITIQUE : I saw this a while ago and only recently re-watched it last week expecting the worst. While the film can't possible be called a masterpiece I did for once find myself caring for the characters which is an unusual thing for an Elm Street sequel - also unlke some of the earlier sequels this film seems to have a semblance of a plot. Admittedly this film has quite a lot of convenient bits for example the unborn babie's dreams are to blame ...

It's a boy! Review ofA Nightmare On Elm Street 5 - The Dream Child DVDby

Advantages: Darker with good atmosphere and impressive FX Disadvantages: Too many poor jokes, and lack of plot development.
...in the end what seems a pointless exercise as far as the Freddy saga goes.
As in "Nightmare 4" the FX are elaborate and are even more "out of this world" than before. The FX are also stylish, and superior direction is given from Director Stephan Hopkins. But style doesn’t make up for lack of plot development. As with part 4, there is none of the real blood and gore of the originals and Freddy plays for laughs rather than for scares. We see far fewer ... ...feeds a girl her own guts, and manages to drop in the line "Bon appetit!", but the film is too busy trying to be serious and dark to have any real funny moments. Possibly my least favourite of the series, it was also the least popular at the box-office fetching less that half of the previous movie's takings. Having said all this most Freddy fans will gladly lap this one up.. ...

Oh dear Review ofA Nightmare On Elm Street 5 - The Dream Child DVDby

Advantages: Hmmm Disadvantages: Where Do I start?!
...me laugh! At one point a kid turns into a superhero and starts shooting at Freddy! Its pathetic, but it will make you laugh.
I'd also like to know how the characters have this innate knowledge about how to move around in their dreams. You want to go somewhere? Find a picture of it and draw a stick figure of yourself there. Yes, one of the characters does this, and does it so casually and confidently, it's like she does this all the time. Give me ... ...he returns to life in a sequence so random and nonsensical it's quite obvious the filmmakers could think up no better alternative. "Make it confusing, and everybody will think they just missed something," I can hear one of the writers saying. From what I gather, Freddy gets reborn, though who gives birth to him a second time and how he grows up again so fast, I have no idea. His opening line, "It's a BOYYY!!!" is too cheesy for words. It's a lot ...
