This wonderful film, which was one of my favourites as a small child, is based on a beautiful novella written over 100 years ago. I watched the film a few days ago after not seeing it for years, and decided to enquire into whether it was based on a book (which I found it was) although the book is slightly different from the film, the character’s are almost legendary because of the novella.
The film is based around a young girl called Sara Crewe; she is around 9 years old and lives with her father in India. She is motherless and therefore shares a special bond with her father. Her father is called away to war and he believes that he is putting her into friendly hands when he sends her to a boarding school in New York. Here, Sara meets many new and exciting characters, along with a cold and cruel headmistress. I do not want to give away too much of the story, but it basically follows the life of a kind hearted child in boarding school, through the loss of her father and fortune, and many of her friends when she is driven to slavery.
The story is inspirational, even for the young children that it targets.
You may wonder the reason for the royal title, Sara believes that she is a princess and that all girls and women are princesses, also like many other children, her innocent mind believes in magic and her imagination stretches to all the amazing stories that she has heard in India. Sara uses her imagination to inspire all of the children in the boarding school, and I remember that even as a young child I too was inspired by a young girl with such imagination.
I think that the most amazing thing about the whole film is that the storyline is quite adult but it is portrayed in such an innocent and harmless way that it makes it perfect for child viewing. The film is wonderful in every aspect, as children we all believed in magic, and the magic in this film is not so unbelievable but wonderful enough for it to be exciting.
If you buy this film for your children, then I do recommend that you watch it with them as it is a lovely film to sit down and watch with them! But I will say that there are a few quite emotional parts, and by the end of the film I am also in complete tears and shreds!! (NOT BECAUSE IM A SISSY!!)
I recommend this film to anyone who has a daughter, and I do not think that many young boys would enjoy it. Nor men for that matter. It is a true mother and daughter film. I would recommend that if your daughter is aged 8 – 13 she will love this film!! The DVD is also priced reasonably, I purchased it for £5 two days ago and I am eagerly awaiting its delivery.
Another thing that I love about this film, is that it reminds me and the bond that I had with my daddy, just how most daughters are with there fathers, the story is so realistic in viewing and emotion. I think it was made perfectly to every part. The acting in the film is fantastic especially from the children, Sara Crewe is played by a beautiful little girl who fits the kind and ‘perfect’ character excellently and the emotion she puts across in the character is completely realistic and heart warming. Another thing that is great in the film is the soundtrack, which I have to say is limited to a small number of songs, all of which suit the scene they are put into perfectly, most of them are ballads, and the song ‘kindle my heart’ is also played repeatedly, if you have ever heard this song then I think you will agree it is beautiful.
The theme of the story is very rags to riches; however, I do not want you to think that it is a rip off of Cinderella in the slightest, because I believe that it is completely unique to Cinderella. The film, and the book give a message to children, that no matter how rich or poor they are, they can still be princesses, I think that although this is a childish message it encourages children to become more confident in themselves from a younger age, and it may also give them an insight into values. The film also encourages a children’s value in imagination which at a young age is extremely important.

It is a Warner Brothers film which was released in 1996 and I read that the reason for its creation was the success of another children’s classic, Secret Garden (which I also loved!)
Anybody who has seen this please let me know about your experience with it, I hope I’m not the only one whose heart was broken in the film!!
I cannot wait until my little cousin is old enough to watch this!

A Little Princess
Its the story of a young girl Sarah Crewe, brought up in India, who has to move to England and go to a boarding school while her father goes to war.
Her father is very wealthy, and so she is treated like royalty in the boarding school, with her own room, all her toys, and all thr other girls love her instantly.
However, after a months, the owner of the boarding school - Miss Minchin, hears of the sudden death of the young girls ... ...she has to work as a slave in the school as her keep.
The Storyline
I think the movie has an excellent storyline, i thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. It tells the story of hard times throughout the war, not only do you see the life of Sarah, But you see how the people of England survive, and how poor it was to live in. Its a very sad movie, as a young girls life is stolen away, from riches to poorer than poor with nothing but herself ...

Advantages: Good acting, an enjoyable film. Disadvantages: None to speak of.
I first saw this film a few weeks ago and I instantly enjoyed it. It wasn't a film I was expecting to like, but it hooked me in.
A little Princess is a film about a little girl called Sara Crewe who grew up in India along with her doted father. Her world is thrown into disarray though as her father is called up to fight in a war. Sara is taken to a boarding/private school in New York (although the original book was based in England). Here she says ... ...She then has to be a servant to the other pupils alongside a young girl called Becky who Sara befriends.
Throughout the film Sara is always positive and supportive to the other girls she meets at the school. She often tells them stories of a far off land of magic (India). She keeps a lot of the girls' morale up throughout her stay at the school and is seen as a bit of a rebel when compared to the strict and cold Miss Mitchen. Miss Mitchen is the ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "A Little Princess (DVD)"
I've had a few days without the internet , and I decided to spend that time watching some of my VHS tapes ? and one of the ones I watched was The LittlePrincess, based on the novel "Sara Crewe; or, What Happened at Miss Minchin's" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The book was later adapted for the stage, and was so successful that Frances' publishers requested that she adapt her original novel to include scenes that were in the stage play but not in the original book . The end result was the book "A LittlePrincess; being the whole story of Sara Crewe," , the title of which has now been shortened to 'A LittlePrincess '
If you've read the book, you'll already be familiar with the tale ? a motherless girl, Sara Crewe, is adored by her father, and thoroughly spoilt by him, because, if he doesn't pull he rout of it, she is all too easily ...
