sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregon sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's neverbeen one to take dramatic risks) but the stellar cast is delightful and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue and agreeable sentiment. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty & Rosie O Donnell all star in this fantastic big league baseball movie.
In 1943, when all men are at war - Professional League Baseball bosses didn’t want to stop the league so they started up an all women’s professional baseball league.
Tom Hanks played Jimmy Dougan who was to coach one of the ladies team - He was an ex player who turned alcoholic, but given a second chance to prove himself.

Geena Davis is brilliant; she has this confidence, the look, and the dolly of the team. She is stunning looking, and just makes the movie; she is the best player in the team. She is perfect for this part. She is beautiful but in the movie she is not there for her looks she’s there for the game. I love Geena Davis; think she’s a great actress.
Lori Petty is great as well; she is the jealous little sister who thinks she’s ugly and useless compared to her big sister and plays the part brilliant, complaining all the time, she has the look, the emotions and you can really feel for her when watching it.
Madonna was good, she thinks she is gorgeous and can get any man she wants and plays it out like she’s a man eater. Very Good
Rosie o donnell is like the big goofy friend of the sexy May, She isn’t sexy at all, she’s doesn’t try to be, she’s very masculine. She was brilliant aswell, some very funny parts with her aswell.
The film as a whole was brilliant, I have loved this film since I was very young, and had to go out and buy it this week when I saw it in the shop. I was into baseball when I first saw this film. I learned a lot of things from this film as well.
Based on a true Story - And a great song from madonna This used to be my playyground.
I hope you like my review –

Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna star in this major-league comedy. Hanks stars as Jimmy Dugan, a washed-up drunk ball player whose big league days are over. I fell this is by far Tom Hanks best film to date,His transformation from a crude, uncaring drunk to the team's hard-nosed but soft-hearted leader is very well and believably done. Hired to coach in the All-American Girls League of 1943 - while the male pros are at war - Dugan finds himself drawn back into the game by the heart and heroics of his "all-girl" team. Jon Lovitz adds a scene stealing cameo as the sarcastic scout who recruits Dottie Hanson (Davis) the "baseball dolly" with a Babe Ruth swing. What makes it work are fine performances by Geena Davis as catcher Dottie Hinson, "the best player in the league," and Lori Petty as her younger sister, Kit Keller. Geena Davis absolutely looks the part with her cool confidence and stately figure while Lori Petty is scrappy and believable as the little sister whose puck and determination set the stage for a sister-rivalry climax at the end. In many ways this film is a throwback to an earlier time when films set out to warm the hearts of the audience and uplift their spirits. Generally this is a all round feel good movie. There is of course a somewhat self-conscious retrospective look at the sorry political and social state of women sixty years ago. Thats why this movie works so well the real-life human characters and their portaryal of life in the sixties. Teammates Madonna, Lori Petty and Rosie O'Donnell round out the roster, taking the team to the World Series. Based on the true story of the pioneering women who became the original womens baseball team.
Cast: Tom Hanks .......Jimmy Dugan Geena Davis.......Dottie Hinson Madonna........Mae Mordabito Rosie O'Donnell......Doris Murphy Lori Petty.........Kit Keller Jon Lovitz........Ernie Capadino David Strathrain..........Ira Lowenstein Garry Marshall.........Walter Harvey Bill Pullman.........Bob Hinson Megan Cavanagh......Marla Hooch Tracey Reiner........Betty 'Betty Spaghetti' Horn Bitty Schram........Evelyn Gardner Don S.Davis.......Charlie Collins, Racine Coach (as Don Davis) Renee Coleman.......Alice Gaspers - Left Field/Center Field (as Renee Coleman) Ann Cusack........Shirley Baker
My main advise about this film, don't write it off because your not into sport(or you dont' understand baseball). This film has everything for a girls night in, comedy, action, romance and the best of all a good cry at the end.
P.S I'm not forgetting about the boys, there lots for you to watch. Girls in short skirt(sliding around), Baseball, Geena Davis and Madonna need i say more. lol
Advantages: Heart felt film of women baseball players during war time America. Disadvantages: If your not into sports films, this mightn't be for you but it still is a great movie

DVD Description
In 1943 when the ranks of professional male baseball players were leaving for the war, a group of ladies left their homes to become part of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and kept baseball alive for a grateful nation. This is their story. Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) is the team's most gifted player, and the camaraderie and jealousy with her sister (Lori Petty) is part of this film's charm and complexity. Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) is the drunken ex-player and slob manager who eventually brings the team to success. Directed by Penny Marshall (BIG, AWAKENINGS) and also starring Madonna, Jon Lovitz and Bill Pullman.
