I have to admit that I had had this DVD sitting on my DVD shelf for about a year before I got around to watching it. I purchased this dvd for £4.99 as an ex-rental at my local dvd rental shop-thought it was a bargain as it is a 2 disc with special features.
Anyway for one reason and another I wasn't to view the Dvd until just recently,I suppose I was partly influenced into my indifference to the movie because when I mentioned it to friends etc I didn't really get a lot of positive feedback about the film that made me feel that perhaps I had purchased a dud!!
one afternoon while at a loose end I decided to take a look....
From the outset the film has a futuristic look about it .Very atmosperic...
I am not usually a HUGE fan of sci-fi but I wanted to give it a fair chance especially as it is a Spielberg!
This is how it starts :A couple have their sick son ''cryogenically frozen until a cure is found for his terminal illness''(what ? that could happen!) in the meantime they decide to take on realistic looking human robotic boy ''David'' who is the first android ever to be programmed with human feelings, and is as close to a human as you could get,he is taken on as a substitute for there son until
their son is eventually cured of his illness. (Yes it is all very sci-fi .But all fits into the context of the story and quite believable)
Soon after this couples' boy gets cured of his illness, and really it is after the natural 'human' son's return home that the story really begins to take shape. The real son is not really very kind to his new 'android brother' jealousy come's into play,Android 'David' is very easily led into doing things much to the amusement of the 'real boy' He manipulates his android brother into doing things that end up getting him in to trouble.,seeing as he is not human it kind of figures that he wouldn't really have formed a conscience,or know where the boundaries are...Anyway the parents get tired of this bad behavior, they have had enough! and after some uming and erring decide its time to 'discard' of David the android boy by ''nicely'' abandoning him at a designated known area for androids which have become surplus to requirements should we say, essentially it is waste land it looks grim.A lot of it is full of various bits and pieces of androids that have gone out of use , also there are androids still working functioning whether they be fully similar android david (although obviously not all as human looking or as finished as David was/is) or partly functioning with various bits and pieces missing or just old and damaged-its like a little community not that you or I would want to live in it,it really does look grim. Well obviously a somewhat capable of 'feeling' android becomes pretty scared almost immediately when he realises that this is infact is his new home .He misses his ''mommy'' as thats what he knew before all this,He had a family with a Mommy ,Daddy and brother... .. David goes onto meet android Robot Giglo Joe(played by Jude Law) and kind of gets taken under his wing, he is an interesting character..... -he is quoted on the dvd blurb as ...'sexually compromising' so make of that what you will ..
.... oh and you have heard of bull fighting right -well imagine something similar involving androids .......a cruel sport ...
Meanwhile in the film 'David still misses his 'mommy' and is trying to find her -I can't really give to much away but the story keeps up suspense and it definitely has the ability to draw you in emotionally keeps you on the edge in some places . There are plenty of twists and turns in the story to hold your interest it can be eeery at times.. ,Along with the great special effects ,they are brilliant, the film turns quite tranquil towards the end (and get the hankies at the ready just in case),
The young actor who plays 'David' (is Haley Joel Osment-who starred in the sixth sense)He did an excellent job and I think as the main charactor of the movie he made this film brilliant.
This film is really quite moving and it really does make you think .It is sad but also uplifting in a strange kind of way -the special effects are awesome and the atmosphere of the movie certainly draws you in.
I liked the fact that I would never have guessed what would happen in this film it was not a predictable story line for me in the slightest so it really held my attention throughout.
The film is over 2 hours long but I don't think you will be dissapointed if you are a spielberg fan and you are into your sci-fi then you will really like it.
Go on ,go watch it!
