A.I. - Artificial Intelligence, directed by Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park), explores the ... more
fine line between robots and humans, David (Haley Joel Osment - The Sixth Sense), a young robotic boy, is the first android ever programmed to feel human emotions. As an experiment, he is used as a temporary substitute for a couple who have had their own son cryogenically frozen until a cure is found for his terminal illness. The film portrays the journey made by David and the 'sexually compromising' robot Gigolo Joe (Jude Law - The Talented Mr Ripley), to find their place within the society that created them. Together with ground-breaking special effects and shocking images of half-human, half-mechanical creatures, this film will blow your mind!

But let the record also show that Kubrick--after developing this project for some 15 years--wanted Steven Spielberg to helm this astonishing sci-fi rendition ofPinocchio, claiming (with good reason) that it veered closer to Spielberg's kinder, gentler sensibilities. Spielberg inherited the project (based on the Brain Aldiss short story "Supertoys Last All Summer Long") after Kubrick's death in 1999, and the result is an astounding directorial hybrid. A flawed masterpiece of sorts, in which Spielberg's gift for wondrous enchantment often clashes (and sometimes melds) with Kubrick's harsher vision of humanity, the film spans near and distant futures with the fairy-tale adventures of an artificial boy named David (Haley Joel Osment), a marvel of cybernetic progress who wants only to be a real boy, loved by his mother in that happy place called home.Echoes of Spielberg'sEmpire of the Sunare evident as young David, shunned by his trial parents and tossed into an unfriendly world, is joined by fellow "mecha" Gigolo Joe (played with a dancer's agility by Jude Law) in his quest for a mother-and-child reunion. Parallels toPinocchiointensify as David reaches "the end of the world" (a Manhattan flooded by melted polar ice caps), and a far-future epilogue propelsA.I.into even deeper realms of wonder, just as it pulls Spielberg back to his comfort zone of sweetness and soothing sentiment. Some may lament the diffusion of Kubrick's original vision, but this is Spielberg'sA.I., a film of astonishing technical wizardry that spans the spectrum of human emotions and offers just enough Kubrick to suggest that humanity's future is anything but guaranteed. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.comOn the DVD:A perfect movie for the digital age,A.I.finds a natural home on DVD. The purity of the picture, its carefully composed colour schemes and the multifarious sound effects are accorded the pin-point sharpness they deserve with the anamorphic 1.85:1 picture and Dolby 5.1 sound, as is John Williams's thoughtful music score. On the first disc there's a short yet revealing documentary, "CreatingA.I.", but the meat of the extras appears on disc two. Here there are good, well-made featurettes on acting, set design, costumes, lighting, sound design, music and various aspects of the special effects: Stan Winston's remarkable robots (including Teddy, of course) and ILM's flawless CGI work. In addition there are storyboards, photographs and trailers. Finally, Steven Spielberg provides some rather sententious closing remarks ("I think that we have to be very careful about how we as a species use our genius"), but no director's commentary. --Mark Walker

The film starts off in a futuristic world. A man who's son and only child has died (or is in a coma ???), is determined to cure his wife's unbearable grief over the loss. He works at a company which creates builds and supplies robots which help with all manner of tasks such as construction and even as companionship for lonely humans. He decides to create his best robot yet - a boy to replace his son. The boy is named David. He believes he is 11 years old and that he lives with his Mum and Dad. He does not know at first that he is not human. Life is fine until new technology brings the couple's real son back to life.
David is abandoned in the woods by his 'Mother'. This is a very hard scene to watch. He is left with his friend, a Teddy bear named 'Teddy', who, like him is able to talk and think but is not as advanced as David.
In the woods at night David meets 'Joe', an 'Adult' robot who he persuades to help him become a real boy so that his mother will take him back and love him.
Joe takes him to a library of sorts to find out about how he can become a real boy like 'Pinocchio'. This leads him and Joe on a long, heartbreaking mission to find the fairy that will make David's dream come true. All the while, Joe is running from a group of humans who want to take him to a circus-like show to have him destroyed infront of a human audience.
It sounds like a complicated story but it really is not complicated to watch. It is very thought-provoking and can be very sad at times as David seems to endure unending failures in his search for happiness. All he wants is his mother to love him. He cannot understand that he is basically a fancy toy, that no one can really love.
The sets are amazing, you really feel as though you are in a futuristic world that has a dark side. The characters are well-written believable and though I am not a fan of Haley Joel, he does a very good job in this film.
Although the rating is 12 I would not really recommend this movie for children as there is a lot of sadness and cruelty in certain scenes that I don't think a child would be able to seperate from reality. For adults though, it is an amazing story that really is an origional take on the old 'robot wanting to be human' story.

Review: I think you should buy this film for the cgi alone, it looks superb and the story is completely original so that's obviously a plus. I personally found it a little boring in places but I am more partial to out and out action flicks. There are many emotional moments and it's another sterling performance from Haley ...

Advantages: Some famous people doing some of the voices Disadvantages: depressing
If you want to spend a pleasant evening watching a dvd, then don't choose this movie to watch. I found it depressing, sad and nightmareish. All about a robot boy who is looking for love from his so called mother (who is human) this movie turns into a fairytale of the worst sort. Often frightening and often cruel, it is guaranteed to send you to bed to toss and turn restlessly or to sleep to dream of horrid things. Of course the acting and the direction ... ...spielberg movie, but it left a very unpleasant taste in the mouth. The worst thing is that this story will more than likley come true at some point and there was also a refernce to the horrors of cloning. It was very easy to see this happening and not too far down the road either. When it does I for one dont want to be around to see it.
The only half pleasant character is that of the Teddy bear who seems more intelligent than anybody else and the ...

Advantages: Good graphics, very involving Disadvantages: Disturbing, far too long
appearance of the film was very artificial but also had that Spielberg look about it. The graphics were really impressive, and I suppose it is already obvious that most of what you are seeing is CGI and not real, so that accepted it was well done. Personally I'm not the biggest fan of this style of film-making, but perhaps I ought to be more open to different things! The film is very vibrant yet somehow this still didn't stop me finding it depressing.
I have to admit I have no recollection of the soundtrack whatsoever, and I think music was pretty sparse in this film.
Classification
The classification for this film is 12, and I find it very hard to comment on this. There was violence in the film, but it was mostly committed against the "Mecha" - or robot people, so somehow it was quite surreal. I still felt it was inappropriate ...
Advantages: Intelligent, thought-provoking, great special effects Disadvantages: Disjointed plot, somewhat derivative
, surprisingly, aren't given that much screen time. The main effect is the stunning sunken cityscape of Manhattan, complete with the eerie site of the tops of the World Trade Center's twin towers. (Apparently, there is already talk of Speilberg deleting this from the DVD release, although personally I would leave it in, either as a tribute/monument or as a testament to the determination of the American people to rebuild them.)
The Teddy is awesome as it clambers about as if it is alive. The androids are excellent creations when you get to see their inner workings, especially the partially broken ones we encounter at the 'flesh fair'. The sets are generally awesome as well, apart from the last mentioned one. Speilberg always gets lost when he has too many flashing lights. (It took him years and several attempts to sort out Close Encounters ...
Advantages: Haley Joel Osment is unnervingly good; Jude Law! Disadvantages: Banal, cloying story and score, no insight, contrived plot, derivative, tedious, etc....hell, where's Stanley?
(Pls. see note following review)
Methinks Stanley Kubrick's name in the title credits is all that has anything remotely to do with Kubrick. Having said that, there is nothing new or interesting or intelligent that Steven Spielberg offers us in ?A. I.: ArtificialIntelligence?. Yes, I chuckled at, oh, some two minutes' worth of film time (and felt them to be inappropriate, nonetheless), and relished every second the beauteous, if waxy-looking, Jude Law (?The Talented Mr. Ripley? and most recently, ?Cold Mountain) was onscreen . I also congratulate the creepily lifelike yet robotic Haley Joel Osment (?The Sixth Sense?) for his fine performance as David, the robot Mecha-boy. The problem, however, lies in the screenplay and the story. It's pure Spielberg sugar and schmaltz delivered in disjointed fashion in several agonizingly long, fatal ...
