I purchased this film from Play for just under a fiver, i probably wouldnt spend anymore than this on it. Ok i was in one of those rom com moods, i had just splurged some well earned doe on 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall', 'Zack & Mirri' and other associated rom coms and happily clicked on the 'similar films' icon to find this one sitting there. Needless to say i bought it!
The tag line of 'Who will he take up the aisle' gave the story away immediately but i didnt care, reading the blurb made me call up my buddy and get him round for another one of those chinese food and two guys watching a rom com, nothing wrong with it. The girlfriend was out and she doesnt really like films that much, especially ones i buy. Ive actually agreed to throw out one of my toy godfather figures if she watches the trilogy, not gonna happen! Its a safe bet
PLOT -
Anyway, Paul (Jason Lee - My Name is Earl) is due to marry his sweetheart Karen (Selma Blair - Cruel Intentions). Pretty straightforward! Unfortunately at his batchelor party he gets a little worse for where and ends up in bed with Becky (Julia Stiles - Save the last Dance). As he does the manly thing and try to get away with it he is hit with the bombshell that not only does he have an std but Becky is Karen's cousin. Bugger i hear all you men say!! No escape surely but the comedy unravels as wedding preperations are made and Paul's lies just keep getting worse as he falls deeper into a hole he can hardly struggle out of.
PERFORMANCES -
At the time Jason Lee's stock was rising after appearing in such films as Vanilla Sky, Almost Famous, Heartbreakers and multiple Kevin Smith films. His wit and comedy is there in bits but i feel the director Chris Koch holds him back a little to cater for a softer audience.
Selma Blair plays a good character for what she is asked to do, be the wannabe bride who wants it all her way with the forgiving, gullable side to her. Not massively great but good enough for this movie
Julia Stiles plays a good character in this film and she rises to it. The good natured, fun loving 3rd wheel who we all want to win the heart of Paul. She has a great smile which is on show here quite a lot and i think the director recognised that!
A couple of supporting performances from David Koechner, James Brolin and Matthe Walker give a little something extra thats worth taking a look at
Bonus material includes a commentary by the director and a couple of featurettes.
OVERALL -
This wasnt too bad a film actually, there were some parts which made me laugh out loud and others where i cringed as Paul's lies got worse. We've all been there...right!? However it was all to samey, maybe its me watching too many of these types of film but you could tell what was going to happen before you even put it on, the layout and story ive seen before and i think it just needed to be that extra bit naughtier.
Maybe its not massively worth a watch but i suppose you can never judge on one persons opinion!! Have fun and live the dream!!
