all. This movie is like an annoying party guest who won't go home, although the most loyal devotees of Julia Stiles and Jason Lee are sure to get a few good laughs. Lee is awkwardly cast (and costumed) as a husband-to-be who's about to discover he's fallen in love with the free-spirited cousin (Stiles) of his comparatively straight-laced fiancée (Selma Blair). When all the who's-who gets figured out, this decidedly unromantic comedy shifts into autopilot with Lee trapped in a rote series of compromising positions. Every outcome is telegraphed far in advance, and true love takes its course with numbing efficiency. Lee barely squeaks by with his dignity intact; the fact that Stiles emerges buoyantly unscathed is further proof that this beguiling actress is deservedly a star on the rise. --Jeff Shannon

Paul Morse is about to get married to girlfriend Karen Cooper, because he is determined to do the right thing by her rather than because he loves her. He has every intention of behaving himself on his stag night, so is rather taken aback to wake up the next day with a woman in his bed. Even worse, his mother-in-law to be calls to say that Karen is on her way. However, he manages to get rid of the evidence, and all seems to be getting back to normal when he goes to a family party and realises that the woman in his bed is actually Karen's cousin, Becky. Can he keep his relationship with Becky quiet? Or is it a sign that his relationship with Karen shouldn't be ending in marriage?
I knew I recognised Jason Lee, who plays Paul, but couldn't place him until I looked him up on imdb.com - he is, of course, Earl of My Name is Earl fame, yet manages to look quite different. As Paul, he has a good job, and is well-groomed - so it is quite easy to see why he should end up with two beautiful women. And he is a likeable enough character. I didn't want to like someone who cheated on his girlfriend, however innocently, but somehow he manages to pull it off and I found myself wanting things to work out for him. It isn't a complicated role, and many Hollywood actors could have done just as good a job, but I liked it nevertheless.
Selma Blair plays Karen. I feel quite sorry for her as an actress - I always seem to see her in roles like this (I'm thinking Cruel Intentions and Legally Blonde), where she plays women who seem to draw the short straw. This one is not much different. Karen is an overbearing girlfriend who wants her wedding to go exactly according to plan, whether Paul does or not, and she tends to pale into significance beside the blonde, fun-loving Becky. It is quite hard to like her - she comes over as being quite hard as a character - so although her predicament is not exactly fair, it doesn't really matter in the whole run of things. As an actress though, I have a lot of respect for Selma Blair and would really like to see her in a role with a bit more of a bite.
Julia Stiles is Becky, and while she doesn't do anything really wrong, she doesn't stand out for me at all. She looks good, and is obviously more right for Paul than Karen is, but as a character, she is generally quite dull. Shame, because I know she is much better than this.
This film, made in 2003, is obviously a rom com, and as such, I didn't have particularly high expectations. And that was probably just as well. The comedy is on the slapstick side - for example, once Paul realises who Becky is, he tries to avoid meeting her by pretending to have the squits, then climbing out of the toilet window, and then being shot at...You get the picture - it is full of toilet humour and getting into silly situations for no apparent reason. The script, written by a number of writers, is okay, but not really that funny, so without the actors and their comic ability, there wouldn't have been all that much to laugh at. I did laugh, but not often enough.
There is a rather strange sub-plot that doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the film. Becky has an ex-boyfriend (played by Lochlyn Munroe) who has a small part in the story - he somehow finds out about Paul and tracks him down, whilst being tracked down himself by the police. I suppose this adds to the complication of Paul's life, therefore creating more opportunities for slapstick humour, but on the whole, I didn't find it all that funny, and it could easily have been removed completely from the film without making much difference.
Morally, I suppose the film is a bit reprehensible - it makes out that it is okay to cheat on your partner if you are not really in love with them. However, it is a comedy and is not meant to be taken too seriously. And I liked the fact that it wasn't too overly slushy - probably because it is told from the man's point of view. Having said that, I'm still not sure how it will go down with men. Teenagers may enjoy it, but I can't see men much older than that particularly enjoying it, apart from the odd bit of toilet humour.
I didn't dislike this film, but it is far from being a good one. If you are looking for something frivolous to while away a couple of hours or so, then this will certainly do that, but don't expect to be bowled over, even if you are a fan of any of the main characters. And I certainly wouldn't recommend buying - wait until it is on television or rent. Three stars out of five.
If you really want to purchase a copy, it is available from play.com for £4.99.
Advantages: Silly rom com with elements of hilarity Disadvantages: Standard plot, storyline and characters which we've all seen before
...from Play for just under a fiver, i probably wouldnt spend anymore than this on it. Ok i was in one of those rom com moods, i had just splurged some well earned doe on 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall', 'Zack & Mirri' and other associated rom coms and happily clicked on the 'similar films' icon to find this one sitting there. Needless to say i bought it! The tag line of 'Who will he take up the aisle' gave the story away immediately but i didnt care, reading ... ...food and two guys watching a rom com, nothing wrong with it. The girlfriend was out and she doesnt really like films that much, especially ones i buy. Ive actually agreed to throw out one of my toy godfather figures if she watches the trilogy, not gonna happen! Its a safe bet

A guy thing.
A guy thing is another one of those Hollywood movies that fits the modern age in that it's quite funny, quite well written and quite well acted. It's a film starring a seemingly tiny group of 'in' or 'it' actors including Julia Stiles and Selma Blair, and is typical of movies of this genre. This is not a movie that will change the world, but it's certainly funny and is a good way to pass a couple of hours by!
Although the title is ... ...to 'girls' although it is a nice inoffensive amiable comedy that trundles along and is very watchable. It is well written and the action does keep moving and will keep you interested and it has some very funny scenes (my favourite is the one with the barrier and the car). Advantages: Puts Islam into context Disadvantages: Too much swearing to watch it with granny
Oh well done- what a cool film. This is not the sort of film that I would normally want to go and see but I heard from Pakastani friends that I should give it a go and I did.
The cast are absolutely brilliant in their roles witht he oscar certainly going to Bassett as the abused wife.
The film is not only funny but also very accurate in it s portrayal of the hypocrisy of the Islam as demonstrated by George. Girls are sure to love watching that guy from Eastenders and that guy from Coronation Street do their thing. The DVD also contains quite a few extras inclujding some deleted scenes. The best deleted scene follows on from one of the sons have a bachelors party on his own.
Watch and buy it- its a classic. ...

Advantages: Owning a DVD of one very funny guy Disadvantages: No extras or anything
Having been a fan of Jack Dee for a number of years I was delighted to recieve this DVD for one christmas. What I like most is his dry humour accompanied by his great wit. Ranging from his own experiences to general idiotic things that wind him up. One guy not afriad to speak his mind.
So I've put the DVD in and start to watch it. The opening sequence is alright but doesn't give anything away, except a repitive voice shouting "Sir Jack Dee...." This I can put up with. BUT when the title menu appears and only shows two options I feel a bit disapointed. I'm given the choice of 'PLAY' or 'CHAPTER SELECTION'. No extras. Not the best start.
When Jack gets going the DVD is worth while. I was in stitches listening to Jack talk about his 'show off methods of being sick', 'His dad being a DIY werewolf' or just his pure hatred of 'biro ...

DVD Description
Paul (Jason Lee) is about to marry Karen (Selma Blair), by all accounts the perfect woman. Yet at his 'bachelor party,' he finds himself smitten by a clumsy Tiki-girl, Becky (Julia Stiles), and wakes up hung over the next morning only to find her in his bed. Guilt-stricken by the situation, he would like to tell Karen what he did. The only problem is that he doesn't remember what happened. As Paul tries to find out the truth, the discovery that Becky is actually his fiancee's cousin is all the more shocking. And to make matters even worse, Becky's psychotic ex-boyfriend, Ray (Lochlyn Munro), is a crooked cop who is determined to get Paul out of Becky's life by any means necessary. Ultimately, Paul must decide whether to marry Karen and take the logical next step, or to take a cue from Becky and embrace his more spontaneous and creative side. This slightly quirky romantic comedy from director Chris Koch (SNOW DAY) features a healthy dose of slapstick from Lee, who is well-suited for the role. James Brolin appears as Karen's macho father, and Julie Hagerty plays Paul's mildly flaky mother.
