Nostalgia at its best !!
Review of ABBA: The Movie (1977) by  KarenUK

Advantages: Great music, '70s nostalgia
Disadvantages: Not much of a plot !!

...Abba - The Movie is a great film of the 1970s. I remember going to the cinema to see this with my parents & have since watched it on TV with my own children. Abba's music is timeless, their success continuing long after their last hit single. Children are discovering their music through karaoke & by such things as the recent Abbamania CD where contemporary pop groups performed their versions of Abba hits. The film is basically following the group on a concert tour, with very mimimal attempts at a storyline not distracting from the great music they made. Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha & Annifrid are at their best here, performing many of their great singles & their music will live on, as this film continues to delight those who watch it.... Read review

A little piece of movie history
Review of ABBA: The Movie (1977) by  maryjo

Advantages: Great music, early Hallstrom
Disadvantages: plot isn't too exciting

...Abba fans and movie buffs alike will enjoy "ABBA the Movie". It was directed by Lasse Hallstrom, who was soon summoned to Hollywood and is now one of the world's finest movie directors. His latest work has included Oscar nominations for "The Cider House Rules" and "Chocolat". As a young director in Sweden, Hallstrom made his name directing the ABBA videos for world wide release. In 1976 he followed the group on tour to film a documentary, added a simple plot, and made "ABBA the Movie". The film was a huge box office success in 1977 when it was first released. It follows Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn and Frida on their tour of Australia where they received a sensational reception. There is plenty of live concert footage, featuring many of their greatest songs. Hallstrom has described this experience as a "film school" for him... Read review

Calling All Abba Fans
Review of Muriel's Wedding DVD by  JacAnn6

Advantages: Great Music and Lots Of Laughs
Disadvantages:

...If you're a fan of Abba's music (and who isn't), then you'll love this film. Set in Australia, it stars Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette) as an Abba-obsessed misfit who sits in her room all day listening to Abba records, while daydreaming of having a fairy-tale wedding. Unemployed Muriel, is made to feel like she's 'hopeless' by her father Bill (Bill Hunter), so she decides to leave her 'sad' life in Porpoise Spit and heads for the big city Sydney, in search of her dreams. She is so desperate to have this fancy white wedding, that she eventually agrees to marry someone 'out of love'. But will the marriage last? This movie has lots of funny moments in it, so even if you're not an Abba fan, you'll still enjoy it.... Read review
