8mm exhibits bad taste and may be shocking to most people, but to me it felt like a movie with serious intent, especially seen as though it tracks the descent of Tom Welles (Nicolas Cage), as the ordinary guy, into the nasty, immoral world of underground pornography. The character, understandably, is tormented, mentally, as he simply cannot accept why all the evil surrounding him exists.
Notoriously panned by critics upon its release, this was by no means a milestone in the career of Cage, even though I believe it to contain ones of his most powerful performances. Advantages: Different, and thought-provoking Disadvantages: Very grim, and terryfying
possible that this video is just an example of SEM or Snuff movies, and that the violence was just stimulated. She has asked Tom to find out whether or not the girl was killed. The ghostly girl is quite distressing. The terrified girl is hit by a masked guy wearing bondage, and is then knifed and slashed to a painful death. Not much is actually shown, but the imagination can basically produce more horrifying effects.
Tom Welles is sent on his way to do an investigation of a lifetime. It may only be an 8mm reel of film, yet the results are disturbingly too close to home.
AND THEN?..
There is a similar colourless theme within this film to Se7en, where there is a constant deadly theme set throughout. As is the mysterious soundtrack played in the background. You know what I mean- the moody violins and tribal music!

Summary Review:
This film, starring Nicholas Cage, confronts the viewer with the suggestion that there might exist a more sinster side to the world of porn at its most extreme that we are all blissfully unaware of, or choose not to consider. Whilst the storyline doesn't have any great twists or turns the impact of the film lies with where it leaves the viewer, i.e. questioning what does exist at the extreme level of the porn industry even if not what is portrayed in the film. A well directed movie of modern day relevance.
