50 First Dates is a romantic comedy released 13th February 2004. It runs for approximately 99 minutes & is rated 12. The film was made on a budget of $75,000,000 and grossed an estimated $196,482,882 worldwide. The film received mainly good reviews, a lot said that Adam Sandler became more likeable in this film because he didn’t use his usual ‘gross out’ comedy routines.

50 First Dates is directed by Peter Segal, he’s also worked on the films: The Longest Yard, Get Smart & Anger Management.

This is the film that reunites Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore for the first time since their 1998 hit film The Wedding Singer. Adam Sandler over the years has become famous for his visual humour for instance in Happy Gilmore he can be seen wrestling a shark & an old man! Adam Sandler has appeared in: Big Daddy, Mr Deeds & The Waterboy.

Drew Barrymore is famous for her versatility, she’s appeared in comedy films, action films, dramas & of course E.T… you can’t get much better than that can you?! Her film roles include: Charlie’s Angels, Never Been Kissed & He’s Just Not That Into You.

Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) considers himself a ladies man, he sleeps with woman after woman & doesn’t do relationships. He loves his life, that is until he walks into a café one day & meets Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore) the two instantly hit it off and decide to meet in the café the next morning. The following day when Henry turns up at the café eager to see Lucy she claims not to know him & freaks out thinking that he’s a stalker or something.

The café owner informs Henry that Lucy suffers from amnesia after being involved in a car crash. Everyday she wakes up believing it’s the day they had the car crash, this was her Father’s idea as he didn’t want to worry her. She’s been doing exactly the same thing for the past year. Henry decides that Lucy is worth the effort so endeavours to make her remember him, even if he has to try every single day.

This is a really enjoyable romantic comedy & infact is one of my favourites that I never tire of watching. It’s one that can be enjoyed over & over again.

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore make a great on-screen couple & have brilliant chemistry. I’m a big fan of all of Adam Sandler’s films but it was a nice change to see him getting in touch with his sensitive side without his usual silly gags. The good thing is about these two is that they’re both established actors so neither one overshadow the other which is often the case when you have on-screen couples.

I think the storyline in this is really original and you genuinely don’t know what’s going to happen as the film progresses. Some may say it’s a soppy storyline but I find it sweet and endearing and definitely one that the girls will enjoy, every girl wants to find a guy that will make the effort to show a girl he loves her everyday.

This film has a really good ending and one that brought a tear to my eye the first time I watched it. If you’re going to watch this film I challenge you not to want to watch this all the way through because I guarantee that you’ll be hooked within 15 minutes of this beginning.

There’s some really funny moments & for a change a lot of them aren’t from Sandler, Drew Barrymore provides a lot of the laughs with her character Lucy. When you see her freaking out because she doesn’t know Henry it’s done in a funny way but you can tell that they’re not making fun of people that actually suffer with amnesia.

I’d highly recommend this film to any fan of romantic comedies as this really is above average and one that can be watched over & over again. This is a great film to watch on a date.

The DVD special features include:
Audio commentary from star Drew Barrymore and director Peter Segal
Deleted scenes with optional audio commentary
2 featurette
Bloopers reel
3 music videos
Scene deconstruction: the making of the dating scene
Filmographies Trailer for Adam Sandler's comedy album
Theatrical trailer
Interactive menu
Scene access

I think everybody will agree that there’s enough special features included to keep you occupied for a while!

The DVD is available to buy from play.com for only £4.99, a great bargain for such a good film and I would highly recommend buying it as if you rent it you’re bound to want to watch it again.

The soundtrack is also available from play.com for £4.99 and includes:
Hold Me Now-Wayne Wonder
Love Song-311
Lips Like Sugar-Seal (Featuring Mikey Dread)
Your Love-Wyclef Jean (Featuring Eve) [L.O.V.E. Reggae Mix]
