Imagine waking every day believing you were at exactly the same point in time, not being able to remember what you did yesterday, the people you met, the places you went to. Imagine being told every day that you suffered a terrible car accident that has left you without any short term memory. Well that's the life sentence that has been dished out to pretty Hawaiian school teacher Lucy Whitmore and no matter what the efforts of her loving father and brother; every day starts the same for poor Lucy.
Henry Roth is the local veterinarian at the sea-life centre, (and of dubious intentions to the visiting tourists) but who falls head over heels in love with Lucy and even after realising her condition, makes it his life work to try to make some sort of relationship together.
That's the plot setting of "50 First Dates" which sees the romantic comedy pairing of Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore once again grace the big screen with their lovely brand of sweet sentimental romance. With any romantic comedy at the end of the day it's got the be the relationship the two leads can strike up that will make or break the film, and theirs is perhaps none better than these two, who play off each other wonderfully well and draw the viewer into their cosy smiley filled world. Sandler doesn't always hit the mark for me, sometimes he gooning capering can turn off the viewer as much as entertain, but here he plays it safe and rounds Henry's character off to a sympathetic, loyal, dependant but charming man. Drew Barrymore on the other hand never fails to impress me. She's by no means an actress of much depth, but I challenge anyone to cast someone who can play slightly kooky, sweet and innocent and yet still with that hit of sex-appeal better than her.
There's some great support too, most notably from Rob Schneider as Ula, the Hawaiian shark friend, (although the sharks don't seem to repay the friendship) and it is through him we get most of the slapstick moments of hilarity. Sean Astin (of Lord of the Rings fame) also chips in with a great turn as the bodybuilding brother of Lucy. Even Dan Ackroyd pops up for a quick appearance although there's not that much to get excited about. There's also some other tiny parts that still raise more than a couple of laughs, the Chinese guy at the restaurant and Henry's sea-world colleague, Alexa to mention but two. I must say thought that poor old Lusia Strus, the actress who plays Alexa, is made up into one of the most hideous old spinster outfits I've ever seen and I had to check out her photos on the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com) and found she is a pure stunner!
Although the condition Lucy suffers from, "Goldfield Syndrome" is completely fictional, the film does tackle some very moving real life patients of various memory related conditions and although the film doesn't make any attempt to really investigate their conditions of the effects it has on their lives it does at least cause the viewer to think (if only a little) beyond the range of this cosy romantic comedy.
There's really not a lot more to say other than any fans of the genre should check the film out and I'll challenge even the most severe of critics not to find something to enjoy in this.
One final word for the ending which had the integrity and the honesty not to "cop out" and yet still wrap things up and let you leave the cinema or switch off the DVD player and let out a big "Ahhhh"
Just to be clear, this is a review of only the film. I don't own the DVD but would probably consider purchasing it if I ever get enough room to store all the films I'd like! That said the careful shopper should be able to pick this up for less than a fiver and you can get it into a DVD double bill with Sandler and Barrymore's other pairing in "The Wedding Singer"

One of these days, I'd like to actually see this film properly ~ I have only ever seen one of the DVD extras on my version of this ~ The Director's commentary with Drew Barrymore superimposed on the film ~ usually I watch the film and no extras ~ My portable DVD player doesn't let me choose from the menu features (I think I need a remote to access the menu features) ~ it's Hobson's choice ~ and in this case it's the film that I cannot see ! ♥♥ ! ~ ........................................................... ~ jes ~ ! ♥♥ !
