50 First Dates

50 First Dates is a fantastic movie that I very nearly didn't rent but am I very glad that I did. Picture us on a saturday night and the kids are in bed and we have a bottle of red wine. Okay the scene is set, so off we go:

Henry Roth played by ADAM SADLER, is a vet at an aquarium in Hawaii. He is renowned for his womanizing and one night stands with tourists. The opening scenes show lots of women simultaneously talking about their experiences with Henry.

Henry happens to go into a local diner where he sees the girl of his dreams, Lucy played by DREW BARRYMORE.

Lucy is a very special girl though, a year ago she had a terrible car accident with her dad and was left with no short term memory. Every night when she goes to sleep, she forgets everything that has happened in that day, her memory is refreshed to the day of the accident.

Lucy's memory of that day is that she would go to the diner and have breakfast while reading the paper, go back to her Dad's where traditionally they would pick a pineapple for his birthday. Marvin would suggest to Lucy that she could paint something nice on the inside of his workshop which is newly painted white. After finishing the painting, they would all sit down and watch a game of American football, which is actually a tape from October 13th, a year ago. Lucy would give him a present (Sixth Sense video) and they'd all watch Sixth Sense before Lucy would retire to bed. After this, Marvin and Doug would reset the whole scenario, re-wrapping the birthday present, getting the same clothes ready for Lucy, the garage repainted white, just so Lucy could continue to believe that it was still October 13th.

Lucy's Dad, Marvin played by BLAKE CLARK, and brother, Doug, played by SEAN ASTIN, are not impressed with the attention that Henry is paying Lucy. Henry is consequently banned from seeing Lucy at the diner. But Henry is far from giving up and comes up with a different plan every day to stop her on the roadside on her way back home and tries to make her fall for him everyday as if it were the first.

Eventually Lucy's Dad is forced to accept the attention that Henry pays his daughter and so they work together to ensure Lucy's happiness.

One day at the diner, Lucy is forced back to reality when a cop tries to issue her a ticket because her car is still taxed as though a year ago. Lucy gets distressed when she realises that it isn't October 13th and rushes home. Forced into a corner, her Dad has to come clean about the car accident and her missing year.

But again, due to Lucy's condition, every time she sleeps, she forgets all about what happened yesterday and has to confront each day from new.

Can Henry still manage to make Lucy fall in love with him everyday and not think of him as a stranger that she's just met? You'll have to watch the film to find out more.

***Characters***

There are some great characters in this film, there's a lovely little Hawaiian guy who sits in the diner who comes out with some great lines.

At the brain injuries unit, there is a guy called 10 second Tom, played by ALLEN COVERT. He is a great character.

Henry's best friend, Ula, played by ROB SCHNEIDER, is a very funny character with his false eye, 5 children and shark bite.

Henry's assistant at the aquarium, Alexa, played by LUSIA STRUSS is a man or is it a woman, well anyway, watch and find out for yourself, but he/she plays a very funny part in the opening sequence.

Henry's friends at the aquarium are hilarious as Willie the penguin and Jacko the walrus. You simply have to see them to appreciate their appeal.

Lucy's doctor, Dr Keats, is played by DAN ACKROYD and plays a small part but is very good.

The diner's chef, Nick played by NEPHI POMAIKAI is a lovely friendly giant with a tattoo on his face. The waitress at the diner, Sue played by AMY HILL is a lovely friendly lady who brings a lot of warmth to the film.

Both myself and my husband thoroughly enjoyed this film and it's not often that we both like a film as much as this together. It was hilariously funny and very touching with a serious side. Whilst not poking fun at brain injured people, the funny sides are handled with great sensitivity.

I would definitely recommend this film, it is a 12 certificate, although the website says it's a 13 but anyway, there are parts that contain some crude language but it's not overly evident as to spoil the film. Do watch and enjoy.

***Soundtrack***

The music is very carribean in tune, slightly reggae style and are very easy to listen to. They are sort of there in the background noticeable but not taking away from the picture at the time. They are 80's love songs newly recorded by Wyclef Jean, Seal, 311, Jason Mraz, Wayne Wonder, Ziggy Marley and more. The tracks are:
1. 'HOLD ME NOW' by Wayne Wonder(Originally by Thompson Twins)
2. 'LOVE SONG' by 311 (Originally by The Cure)
3. 'LIPS LIKE SUGAR' by Seal featuring Mikey Dread (Originally by Echo and the Bunnymen)
4. 'YOUR LOVE (L.O.V.E. REGGAE MIX) by Wyclef Jean ( Originally by The Outfield
5. 'DRIVE' by Ziggy Marley (Originally by The Cars)
6. 'TRUE' by Will. I. Am & Fergie (Originally by Spandau Ballet)
7. 'SLAVE TO LOVE' by Elan Atlas (Originally by Roxy Music)
8. 'EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE' by UB40 (Originally by The Police)
9. 'GHOST IN YOU' by Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray (Originally by Psychedellic Furs)
10. 'FRIDAY, I'M IN LOVE' by Dryden Mitchell (Originally by The Cure)
11. 'BREAKFAST IN BED' by Nicole Kea (Originally by UB40)
12. 'I MELT WITH YOU' by Jason Mraz (Originally by Modem English)
13. 'FORGETFUL LUCY' by Adam Sandler. ***This was my favourite of all of them.

The soundtrack is available to buy on CD according to the Sony Website although I haven't seen it or don't know the price of it.

***Directed by***

Peter Segal.
Produced in 2004
