50 First Dates, works on the basis that everybody lives in Hawaii, everybody has jobs they love. All the scenery is beautiful; you can just go and lie on the beach after joyful work, and no matter what nasty things happen to you, they all become recovered in the end. If you watch this with that attitude you should have a right laugh. It’s a happy, fun romantic comedy. With two of my favourite actors in!
The Story Henry Roth is a vetenerian, who enjoys his job, and his good at it. (He can do some neat tricks with walruses!) His college is a little strange but who cares? Henry’s hobby outside of work, is renovating and sailing his old but usage sail boat. While he is sailing one day, his boat crashes into a small island on the coast of Hawaii, while in this island, he meets Lucy a extraordinarily beautiful blonde, who Henry is instantly attracted to her and starts flirting. They make a good repour, their both flirting and there seems to be a good chemistry. They talk for hours, but Lucy has to go, so does Henry. So he fixes his boat and is back off to his home. The next day, he couldn’t help himself; he goes back to the café where he met Lucy. They see each other, but Lucy is off with Henry and she doesn’t seem to have any
recognisision of him. The owner of the café, eventually tells explains that Lucy was in a terrible car crash, in which she lost her long term memory, she thinks every day is the July the 12th or something like that. It’s now that the real story takes place; Henry has to win Lucy over every day and its one hell of a ride. It’s hard, but it doesn’t help that her over protective father and brother is keeping him from her.
Eventually Lucy’s family get to like Henry and him and Lucy seem to be making progress, it’s the first time she has ever sung since her mother died and Henry seems to be winning her over more and more often. Everything is breezy ands hunky dory. Until Lucy one day finds out about the accident. Her family have seen her go through it before, but it hits Henry hard. He decides to break with tradition. Everyday he tells her about her medical problem, using the medium of a video camera and some rather dodgy acting.
Spoiler Alert This is one of the only romantic comedies in the whole world that doesn’t have a happy ending! It’s not tragic or nothing, but it’s still not your usual and they all lived happily ever after!
Performances • Adam Sandler is often critically bashed, for not being an excellent actor and their right, he isn’t a great actor, but the roles he chooses to play don’t require him to be good at acting. He is however funny. Whatever you say, he always makes me laugh, and I for 1 am a fan. I like his kind of humour, it’s childish and immature, but hardly ever slap stick (which I can’t stand read my Dodgeball review to see what I mean) His portrayal of Henry Roth, is nothing special, but it is charismatic, funny and confident. Not brilliant, but a good laugh.
• Drew Barrymore’s is my favourite actress at the moment. I think she is excellent. She is no doubt the best thing about 50 First Dates, she is funny, sweet, heart breakingly raw and she simple glows in this role. I don’t care what you say; it’s a wonderful performance that deserved to have more material to work with. When her character Lucy finds out about her accident and amnesia. She is heart breaking, my girlfriend and cousin cried. She pours everything in. She manages to make a stupid, flat character. Into someone that you really like and feel for. One scene when she is one a dock, is especially heart wrenching. I think that this is the best performance in 50 First Dates and maybe her career! Excellent, I LOVE DREW!!! Illuminates the screen!
• I hate Rob Schneider, Did you see Deuce Biglow the Male Gigglo (if no, I don’t recommend it) in this role he is no better than any other one. But he gets all the jokes, and he is certainly zany and stupidly retarded for the role. He is nearly bearable in this role; I do have to admit that he did make me laugh a few times though.
• Sean Astin isn’t require to act in his role as Lucy’s steroid popping, fitness freak of a brother. It’s not a dreadful performance, if you can call it that. He is super hyper (Which is what the role needed) But I have a little nark, it’s almost like he is being so manic because he doesn’t believe that the character is strong enough to just slow down for a couple of minutes.
• Lusia Struts is funny, as the big momma of Lucy’s café place. She is confident ans airy, not much material to work with, but what she does have she makes the best out of it.
Script The script is I’ll grant you pretty awful, but in its defence, it is fun and light and airy. The lines are cringe worthy and the writer causes a criminal offence (not giving the beautiful Drew Barrymore enough material to work with!) Awful script, but manages to pull through a few laughs.
Production Values The production budget for this was 80 million or so, as you would imagine it’s pretty good. The scenery is lush and the actors aren’t c listers are they? Looks fantastic and the camera work are very professional.
Overall A fun flick with enough laughs to keep you entertained, not big on brains, but neither was the Wedding Singer, but it still had charm and was whimsical. And any film with Drew in cant be all bad!
Just quickly, the soundtrack is like reggae covers. It’s a lot of fun and is inkeeping with the mood of the movie!
