Deschanel (Failure to Launch). "This is a story of boy meets girl" begins the wry probing narrator of 500 Days Of Summer and with that the film takes off at breakneck speed into a funny true-to-life and unique dissection of the unruly and unpredictable year-and-a-half of one young man's no-holds-barred love affair. Tom the boy still believes even in this cynical modern world in the notion of a transforming cosmically destined lightning-strikes-once kind of love. Summer the girl doesn't. Not at all. But that doesn't stop Tom from going after her again and again like a modern Don Quixote with all his might and courage. Suddenly Tom is in love not just with a lovely witty intelligent woman -- not that he minds any of that -- but with the very idea of Summer the very idea of a love that still has the power to shock the heart and stop the world.

Gone are the days when a boy meets girl, fall in love, get married and live happily ever after.
The narrator warns us in his funny voice that this is not a love story and it actually is much more than that. I loved the way the film progresses, the director chose to make it interesting by showing us the days in the bracket,1 being the day he first met her.The film doesn't move chronologically but is rather random, jumbling from forward to backward at times.
Summer is the new assitant of Tom's boss and he likes her from the first day.Its a modern take on romance where Summer(Zooey Deschanel) doesnt believe in the existence of love while Tom is madly in love with her.Summer lets him know that she isn't looking for anything serious and Tom accepts her terms. As they start hanging out more and spend more quality and intimate moments together,Tom is confused what she really means by being only friends when she is actually doing everything a girlfriend would do with her boyfriend. At a certain point,he just can't take it anymore and starts asking questions.
The film is really well written and nicely edited. It never feels out of sorts despite the juggling of days and sequences.Post their breakup, the film becomes slightly static but picks up once they meet again by chance in a train compartment after a few months.
Its upto you to find out how the film ends. For me,the last 20 minutes took the film to a different level altogether.Everything was so wonderfully explained and the writers didn't compromise one bit of their dream and went ahead with a very strong ending indeed.
The characters are real and so are the performances. Both the protagonists are fantastic.I would say that Tom goes through more emotionally and credit must go to Joseph Gardon for being every bit of the character. He makes you feel for the character.Zooey is charming as Summer. She is certainly one young actress to look out for(loved her work in Yes Man as well).
This is a great film with an original script and therein lies its strength. The film digs in deep into today's definition of love and relationships, digs deep into the personalities of youth- who are afraid to follow their dreams and is somehow unaware of love.
Advantages: entertaining, hilarious, realistic, great performances Disadvantages: none!

I'm not a massive cinema-goer. I love films, don't get me wrong, but I rarely see a film that grabs my attention so much that I jump up and think "I want to see that RIGHT NOW!" I probably thought it with "Confessions of a Shopaholic" to some extent, but generally, even with films I really like the look of, I'm prepared to wait for the DVD.
If it wasn't for my lovely friend, and fellow ciao'er, Bandcamp, I probably wouldn't have seen "(500) Days of Summer Yet" either. And that would have been a BAD thing.
I hadn't really heard all that much about the film beforehand, all I knew was that it starred Zooey Deschanel and "that dude who played the kid in Third Rock From the Sun" and I knew that it ...
Advantages: Good Acting, Good Script, An Okay Film Disadvantages: Something is missing, the film was too jumpy and confusing. It should have worked and it didn't
a scenic route and has not even ended up at the same destination that romantic comedies ?should? end up at. Because of this, it makes it a very unique film, and because of its uniqueness I found myself thinking about it 2 days after the film and finally going, this was actually a very well done and well put together film, but at the time of watching it, I did not find it enjoyable to watch, mainly due to the little tweens laughing at anything and everything within the film.

DVD Description
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel star in director Marc Webb's wry, nonlinear romantic comedy about a man who falls head over heels for a woman who doesn't believe in love. Mark (Gordon-Levitt) is an aspiring architect who currently earns his living as a greeting card writer. Upon encountering his boss' beautiful new secretary, Summer (Deschanel), Mark discovers that the pair have plenty in common despite the fact that she's seemingly out of his league; for starters, they both love the Smiths, and they're both fans of surrealist artist Magritte. Before long Mark is smitten. All he can think about is Summer. Mark believes deeply in the concept of soul mates, and he's finally found his. Unfortunately for Mark, Summer sees true love as the stuff of fairy tales, and isn't looking for romance. Undaunted and undeterred by his breezy lover's casual stance on relationships, Mark summons all of his might and courage to pursue Summer and convince her that their love is real.
