Yay, the joy I had when Hubby picked a film which was not a western! As you can guess from the title of this film it is about a 40 year old man who is still a virgin.
Steve Carell plays the role of Andy Stizer who works in the stock room at an electrical store. He lives a nice quiet life in his apartment which is full of boys stuff and old action figures which he says are all collectables. He is surprised one day when his work colleagues invite him to join their game of poker as they are one player short. As with men the conversation at the game soon turns to sex and when Andy makes something up about the strangest woman he has ever had they all soon realise that he is still a virgin.
The 3 friends take it upon themselves to help Andy have sex and they set about trying to educate him in the woman department. Will Andy finally get a woman to have sex with him or will his meeting with Trish change his mind about getting a drunk woman to sleep with him?
I really am pleased that I re-watched this film as I
just could not remember what happened in it. Both me and hubby really enjoyed it and there were a lot of laugh out loud moments. The storyline was very good and could be very true for quite a few men. I think Steve Carell did a great job of playing the role of Andy and he made his character extremely believable, I also like how he put over his shyness with women as it did seem very genuine. The supporting actors were also very good in their roles and I think that they all bought a lot to the film. There were a lot of different and fun characters, including one pot head and one who was still obsessed with his ex-girlfriend who had split up with him 2 years ago. I think I enjoyed the role which Paul Rudd took most.
The role of Trish, played by Catherine Keener was a great relief for the film as she managed to take the story away form sex talk and added some normality to the storyline and I think she portrayed her character very well. I also think that she worked very well with Steve Carell and they have a good chemistry.
The film was set in modern times in America so not much thought was needed for the sets and costumes and they all did look good and authentic. I liked how they gave Andy a bike to ride instead of him being able to drive as this just added to the side of his character which had not grown up.
As I said before there are a lot of funny moments in this film and the one which particularly stood out for both me a hubby was when Andy was having his chest waxed. We both laughed out loud at his pain and thought he was very brave to have this done and loved how he was left with a bald face shape in his chest! The co-worker also added a great amount of humour to this film and I loved when Paul Rudd’s character when back to work drunk and started playing with the camcorder on the big televisions.
I did think that the part of the storyline with the co-workers always calling each other gay and telling them how they knew they were gay was a bit too much as it was just continued throughout the film, yes it was funny at first but it did start wearing thin for both me and hubby.
The music in the film was all good an modern but none of the tracks really stood out for me but I do remember thinking that they were all very appropriate.
The ending to this film was a let down to me as it was going extremely well right up to the last 3 minutes when they suddenly all started doing a song and dance, for both me and hubby this just did not fit and really did spoil and great and funny film. They could have just left this bit off and ended it before the singing began and this would have been so much better.
The DVD which we have does have some bonus material which includes:-
Deleted Scenes You Know How I Know you are gay Andy Fantasises Cal and Paula Date a Palooza Line o Rama Waxing Doc Advice from Mooj Gag Reel My Dinner with Stormy
We did not take the time to watch any of these features so cannot make comment on them.
The running time of the film is 2 hours and 7 minutes which I think was quite long enough and the certificate on this film is a 15. I do definitely agree with this rating as there is a lot of swearing and sexual references in this film and it is certainly not suitable for younger viewers.
We managed to pick this up for just a few pounds well over a year ago, so do shop around and get this for a bargain. I am going to recommend this film to viewers as it is extremely funny and well though. I think as long as you don’t mind the sex references and swearing them you too will love this.
