The 40 year old virgin is one of those films that you watch knowing that it will be full of silly humour and mainly aimed at the young male viewer. I sat down to watch this not really knowing if I would really enjoy it that much as it's all been done before really hasn't it? However I was surprised to find myself really enjoying it and have no complaints about watching it again and again!
The plot - Andy Stitzer is a 40 year old man who has an OK life. He has an Ok job with friends and has his own nice apartment but there is one thing missing in his life and that is that he's never had sex! Yes at the grand old age of 40 he has never 'done the deed'. When his friends find out about this they want to get him out there on the scene immediately. However Andy has started seeing somebody - Trish, who is a single mother to three children. There is a catch though as they have started their relationship with the 'no sex' pact. How will his friends mange to get him to have sex now?
Cast - What makes work so well is the range of actors chosen for the main roles - they are perfect for it in every way. Andy is played by none other than Steve Carell who really plays the nerdy 40 year old well. Obviously Steve Carell has done well since this film with plenty of other roles that people will recognise him from such as 'Evan Almighty' and 'Dan in real life'. A few familiar faces also appear who many will also know from other movies in the same genre. Not surprising really as a couple of the co -stars from this also appear in other films together that were written and directed by the same guy, Judd Apatow. Ones you may notice are Paul Rudd, in the role of David and Seth Rogen in the role of Cal who has also been seen in the film 'knocked up' together and also written and directed by Judd Apatow. Romany Malco also stars as a main role in this film, who more recently appeared in the Mike Myers film 'Love Guru'. The last character who has a main role is Trish, played by actress Catherine Keener. I personally cannot remember seeing her in much else but probably the most known films that she has been in is are '8MM' and 'Being John Malkovich'.
Overall opinion - The cast do work really well together as they all fit in well with the theme of the film and the way the directed wanted them to come across. This is probably why he chose so many of the actors for other films he did as most of his films are along the same humour and genre! They come across well on screen and even though they don't seem that different to how they are in many other films it works well for the concept as a group of guys who just want to be out having fun and meeting woman and are literally gobsmacked that their friend has never had sex! There are some great comedy moments that ensue in their quest to get Andy laid which these actors pull off really well and I couldn't imagine others being able to do as well as they do.
The film was directed by Jude Apatow and is rated 15 due to language and sexual references. Runtime is 116 minutes. You can pick up a copy for as little as a £3 on various online stores espcially during the sales which for this film is an absolute bargain!
