The 40 Year Old Virgin is a romantic comedy film released in 2005. The film was directed by Judd Apatow. The film stars Steve Carell (who also co-wrote the script along side Judd Apatow) , Catherine Keener , Paul Rudd , Romany Malco and Seth Rogen. The film won five awards. This film is a 15 certificate.
The cover of the dvd is attractive. It consists of the main character Andy sitting facing the audience drinking out of a straw. On each side of him are a couple kissing. I think it is interesting how there a young couples beside him as it emphasis how old he really is , as there are young couples with more experience than him , and I think it also shows how everyone is more experienced than him. The fact that he is drinking out of a straw perhaps indicates that he is rather childlike. I like the 'tagline' of the film ; The Longer You Wait The Harder It Gets. I think it fits in really well with the story.
Andy is forty years old , has a career he enjoys…but there is just one thing…he's a virgin. When his women-mad work colleagues find out they are determined to help him lose his virginity , by taking him to dating classes and nightclubs. However Andy has no confidence or experience. Will his friends complete their task or will Andy remain a virgin forever ?
I thought this film was fantastic. Some parts are hilarious. I like at the beginning when Andy's colleagues think that there's something wrong with him and that he is maybe a serial killer. They think he's odd but decide to invite him to play cards with them anyway. It is so funny when they discover that there is in fact nothing wrong with him…but are surprised to discover that he is a forty year old virgin. I like how Andy's character 'grows' as the film goes on ; his character in the beginning is different to the character at the end of the film. I like Andy's character as I feel sorry for him because he is this sweet , lovely gentlemen , however all his friends are pressurising him to 'do it' and although he pretends he does not care that he is still a virgin, you can see really that it does bother him. I think the message of this film is that , although this film is meant to be funny , is that being a virgin is nothing to be ashamed of. The characters a good and each one is full of humour. My favourite part of the film is when Andy's friends tell him to tell them all about his sexual experiences , and he makes them up , even describing breasts as a 'bag of sand'. I would definitely recommend watching this film , it is hilarious.
I bought this dvd from Woolworths - £5
* Memorable Quotes* Andy Stitzer: You know what? I respect women! I love women! I respect them so much that I completely stay away from them!
Nicky: You have really kind eyes, you know that? Andy Stitzer: Thanks. Umm... your hat has sequins.
Andy Stitzer: Is it true that if you don't USE it you LOSE it? Health Clinic Counselor: Is that a serious question? Andy Stitzer: No, it wasn't.

Totally disagree. Found this film awful, watched it with a few mates in an empty cinema and ended up throwing popcorn at each other throughout. Good review tho. Kirsty. x
