Directed by:
Judd Apatow (Knocked Up)

Starring:
Steve Carell (Evan Almighty, Little Miss Sunshine)
Paul Rudd (Anchorman, Clueless)
Seth Rogen (Knocked Up, You, me and Dupree)
Catherine Keener (8MM, Capote)

Production Year:
2005

Running Time:
116 minutes

Certificate:
15

Characters:
Andy (Carell) - Andy is a 40-ear-old virgin who respects women so much that he just completely avoids them. After a series of disasterous attempts , he has given up and seems content to watch survivor, paint war figures and getting on with his job at an electronics store. A sweet and shy guy, he gets taken under the wing of his workmates who try to get him to pop his cherry, with all their vast experience and hot tips!

Trish (Keener) - Trish is a hot grandma who meets Andy when buying a video player. She runs a store that sells people's stuff on ebay, and struggles to keep on top of having a teenager, running a business and dating.

David (Rudd) - David is a salesman at the electronics store who is at the end of his wick and threatens to massacre everybody in the store. He reminisces constantly over his relationship with a girl called Amy that ended two years earlier.

Jay (Romany Malco) - A confident player who has a steady girlfriend but is always off having affairs.

Cal (Rogan) - Cal works in the store room with Andy and is a self confessed stoner.

Plot:
Andy (Carell) leads a full life, playing video games, exercising and collecting action figures. He has been so busy that he has never gotten around to losing his virginity. A bit of a loner, he is invited to a poker game by his work mates, who are a bit concerned he is a serial killer, but need an extra player so invite him along anyway!
At the poker game the conversation turns to sex, and Andy can't fool David (Rudd), Jay (Romany Malco) and Cal (Rogan) that he is experienced with the ladies. They decide to take him under their wing and teach him the ways. Reluctantly he goes along with it, and learns from Jay how to go for "drunk bitches" and from Cal that the trick to chatting up a woman is to just ask questions, because women just want to talk about themselves!
Unsuprisingly these plans don't lead to any real success, so after an attempted chest waxing (which is brilliantly funny and cringeworthy) he decides to start dating Trish (Keener) a mother of three who runs the "We sell your stuff on ebay" store. As he begins to fall for her he has to deal with the pressures of modern dating, a teenage daughter, a sexual predator of a boss and his frankly messed up new mates.

DVD Extras:
All extras are available with or without commentary from Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen.
  • "You Know how I know you're gay" - A scene between Cal and Dave starting out as how Dave plans to kill himself and ending with the infamous "you know how I know you're gay lines." Lasts about 5 minutes which I think in the film is cut down to about a minute and has random musings from Apatow and Rogen about would it be funny if Bill Clinton saw the movie. 5/10
  • "Andy's Fantasies" - The part of the movie that was cut out for being too dirty. A selection of clips that were potentials to what Andy could masturbate too. The commentary offers an apology to an actress playing a news reader who gets the axe. 7/10
  • "Paula and Cal" - A conversation improvised between the characters of Cal and Paula (the boss.) Best watched without the commentary as the train of thought within the improvisation goes from how sexy Julie Andrews is to stealing from home depot. 6/10
  • Deleted scenes - 6 deleted scenes. The best ones are an alternative ending to the drink driving sequence and a very random kareoke sequence. 9/10
  • Advice from Mooj - a quite funny extended scene with an elderly Indian employee of the shop explaining all the different sexual activities he knows. Not for the easily embarrased. 5/10
  • Waxing Doc - The filming of possibly the funniest film. Carell actually gets waxed and his reactions and everyone around him. 10/10
  • "Date-a-Palooza" - An extended scene of the speed dating scene, some very funny bits that didn't make it into the film. 9/10
  • "Line-O-Rama" - A selection of improvised lines and alternatives to the script across a number of scenes. 8/10
  • "My Dinner with Stormy" - a totally staged meeting between Rogen and porn star Stormy who appears in the film as one of Andy's fantasies. A bit uncomfortable to watch and didn't really need to be put in as there are so many other funny extras. 2/10
  • "Gag Reel" - A selection of clips of the actors losing it and just bursting into laughter, and a few sequences with Apatow's wife who stars in the film as Nicky the drink driver. 7/10
  • Trailers for the Skeleton Key and Serenity

Funniest line: "She had hands as big as Andre the Giant and an Adams apple as big as her balls."

Overall:
This is such a sweet and funny film. The whole premise revolves around the fact that as Andy is the virgin, he is the screwed up one, but as the film develops it seems he is the only one with a healthy attitude to sex and women.
When this film came out, none of the actors were massive stars, so it has a really low budget feel to it, which adds to the warmth of it. The fact the actors were allowed to improvise scenes adds to some of the funniest pieces, and there are times when you are laughing, but really know you shouldn't be.
This film's strength is its characterisation. All the characters are believable and you really invest in them emotionaly. You really want them all to sort themselves out and find someone by the end of the film.
Catherine Keener, as the love interest is at times sweet and quite scary, and quite a brilliant comedy actress. If you want to see her in another irreverant comedy - go for "Death to Smoochy" - utter brilliance.
There is a limited soundtrack, but what there is is quite good.
The film does use some quite bad language every now and again, and some reasonably graphic sexual decriptions, so just in case you don't like this kind of thing you might want to steer clear.

The film has been out for a while now so can be bought relatively cheaply:

Geat review there Becky; I thought this film was paper-thin and overrated, though there are some laughs and Carrell was terrific! Chris x
