...aspects of '40 Days and 40 Nights' are ridiculous and cheesy, I appreciate the fact that it is a pro-sex movie.
Sure, at the beginning, Matt is miserable with his life of one night stands, but the film does not make any moral judgments about his lifestyle choices. He feels unfulfilled emotionally, but the film does not imply that Matt will be going to hell or be suffering any other consequences.
The premise is rather ... ...choice to remain chaste for 40 days. Partly, he seems convinced that his brother will fail, but he also seems unsure of his own decision. A full-fledged priest also puts in his two cents of doubt that Matt will be able to abstain. It is an old cinematic convention that women who enjoy sex often end up dead by the end of the film. If a sexy actress put out in whatever we were watching in my History of Cinema class, my friends and I would whisper to each other, 'Well, SHE's gonna die.' So, when leading lady Erica (Shannyn Sossamon, 'A Knight's Tale') complains that not sleeping with Matt (Josh Hartnett) 'really sucks,' I half expected her to get hit by a streetcar a few minutes later. Even though many aspects of '40 Days and 40 Nights' are ridiculous and cheesy, I appreciate the fact that it is a pro-sex movie.
Sure, at the beginning, Matt is miserable with his life of one night stands, but the film does not make any moral judgments about his lifestyle choices. He feels unfulfilled emotionally, but the film does not imply that Matt will be going to hell or be suffering any other consequences.
The premise is rather weak, to put it mildly. Six months after being dumped by his bombshell girlfriend Nicole (Vinessa Shaw), Matt is still distraught. He has no trouble pulling, but the meaningless sex begins to bother him, and he is troubled by his visions of the ceiling crumbling above him whenever he's with a lady. Determined to win back his sanity and his ex-girlfriend, Matt decides to take a vow of celibacy for the duration of Lent. 'The Lysistrata' it's not.
Matt's roommate Ryan (Paulo Costanzo) serves as Matt's foil. Ryan enjoys womanizing more than Matt does and seems to resent the ease with which his roommate can pick up women. Women throw themselves at Matt, especially after he has sworn off sex, despite the fact that he appears to have very few brain cells. Ryan is also indignant that Matt is trying to 'defy nature' by not liberating his seed (he has also vowed not to masturbate) for two fortnights. I found it refreshing that a mainstream film would admit that normal men need to do this-- without using an apple pie.
Conveniently, but rather unrealistically, Matt's brother is in training to become a priest, and Matt goes to him to confess his sexcapades. Interestingly, Matt's celibate brother disapproves of Matt's choice to remain chaste for 40 days. Partly, he seems convinced that his brother will fail, but he also seems unsure of his own decision. A full-fledged priest also puts in his two cents of doubt that Matt will be able to abstain. The film gets in plenty of digs at the Catholic Church including a scene where Matt imagines the Virgin Mary winking at him.
Another interesting touch is that Matt's parents disapprove of their older son's choice to become a priest. As Matt struggles to maintain sanity during his vow, he retreats to what he thinks is a safe place: his parents' home. To his dismay, his parents start talking about sexual positions at the dinner table. Sure, this scene was going for a cheap giggle at the idea of middle aged people getting it on, but at least it wasn't meant to be gross.
Despite the unusual premise and pro-sex message, '40 Days and 40 Nights' is mainly a bland, romantic comedy. As soon as Matt begins his vow, he meets the adorable and vibrant Erica at a laundromat. The viewers know that Matt and Erica are meant to be together, but various forces and misunderstandings keep them apart.
Although this film was made just a couple of years ago, it is quite dated due to the Internet bust. Matt, Erica, and all their friends work at booming dot-coms where the employees have little else to do but surf the 'net and place bets on how long Matt can last without having sex or taking matters into his own hands. Ah, those were the days.
Maggie Gyllenhaal does an excellent job as Sam, Erica's best friend, who doubts Erica and Matt's relationship. She serves as the female equivalent of Ryan, a symmetry that works well.
Josh Hartnett is supposed to be charming and likable, but I found his character boring and his acting wooden (no pun intended). The one expression he seems to have mastered is the Ben Affleck style open mouth of awe. I found myself agreeing with Sam that Erica is much too good for the dunderheaded Matt.
At times, I couldn't tell if this film was simply low-budget or intentionally used cheap-looking special effects, but there are some very fake-looking sequences.
The acting is bad, the story weak and predictable, and there are some truly ridiculous scenes (one involving a flower springs to mind...), but '40 Days and 40 Nights' is fun. It's a guilty pleasure, but, if there's one thing you'll learn from this film, there's no shame in that.
Advantages: Funny in places and has an attractive cast Disadvantages: Very repetitive as it really has only one gag
...sex and self gratification for 40 days. But when his room mate learns of his self enforced abstinence, things take a turn for the worse as he becomes the focus of everyone’s attention as they start to gamble on when he will crumble and give in to temptation. Things are made even worse when Matt meets the beautiful Erica (Shannyn Sossamon) and as their friendship grows he struggles to explain to her about his self inflicted celibacy without sounding ... ...first experienced "40 Days and 40 Nights" on the big screen back in 2002, I absolutely loved it and thought it was hilarious. Maybe this was due to the then cinematic trend for juvenile, teen sex comedies such as "American Pie" or maybe it was because I was just very juvenile. But over the subsequent years my enjoyment of "40 Days and 40 Nights" has certainly waned as either I have outgrown these sorts of movies or that "40 Days and 40 Nights" although ...

...pleasures of the skin for 40 days and 40 nights, and can the beautiful girl at the laundrette help him? And so the scene is set for possibly the shallowest movie I have ever seen.
The one plus point was that Josh Hartnett (who honestly has the acting ability of a garden shed) and Shannyn Sossamon did play together quite well, and the romantic interludes did work more or less. Shannyn Sossamon's character, Erica, was the one beacon of light in the ... ...to the end of the 40 days culminated with what was in fact, a rape scene. OK the victim was male and the perpetrator was a gorgeous female, but it still was unconsensual sex and yet this was brushed away as if it didn't matter. Still no doubt in the shallow minds of the Hollywood producers this was perfectly acceptable.
I realise I'm not the film's target audience and perhaps in the eyes of a younger viewer, and at the risk of being sexist, a female ...

...call tonsillitis.
After watching 40 Days and 40 Nights, I thought it would be a good idea to share it with you all!
Josh Harnett (Pearl Harbour, Black Hawk Down) plays Matt Sullivan, the lovable and extremely devoted lover of Nicole (Vinessa Shaw). The film starts with Matt watching scenes of Nicole and himself on his laptop, obviously filmed during some sickeningly happy and tender times together. In the scene that follows we see Matt attempting ... ...foreplay, NO fooling around for 40 days and 40 nights!
John tries to warn him of the difficulties that he would face (well he would know) and actually tries to dissuade Matt. Matt seems determined and gets home, clears out the porn, mags, pics or anything that may have him thinking of sex at all and replaces with things like model making sets, books etc. Ryan returns home to find a very different and more positive Matt. After a few days he discovers ...

...abstinent from any sex for 40 days. Which menas: no sex, no kissing, no 'sucking' no masturbation – nothing meaning really nothing relatetd with sex.
His flat mate, Ryan (Paulo Costanzo), can't believe this and tells it everyone he knows. The next day, there is a website looking for people who want to bet on the day Matt breaks his own rules. Many people are interested in winning this and of course they try to seduce Matt of having sex again... ... ...one day after speaking his vow: Erica (Shannyn Sossamon) is sweet, loveley, nice – to be preciseley: a dream. What I think

Seeing the trailer I was awaiting another strange and meaningless teen movie. Partly, it is a typical film like that. But people are a bit grownup this time and the story is not that bad as we know it from so many teen comedies (like Scary Movie or sth. Like ...

Advantages: Just so damn funny Disadvantages: None whatsoever
Well, this being my first ever film review on Ciao! I decided that, in all clear conscience, there was no other movie worthy of my attention moreso than possibly my all-time favourite flick Grosse Point Blank.
Looked over for far too long, I felt that as a fan of the aforementioned movie I had a sacred duty to perform in attempting to bring this out from under the shadow of mediocrity, where it has languished for far too long, and into the light and also, with any luck, into people's DVD players too.
Written by Tom Jankiewicz. D.V. DeVincentis and Steve Pink ( 40Days And 40Nights, and High Fidelity. ) and John Cusack ( Who's other movies will be listed at the end of this review. ) and Directed by George Armitage, Grosse Point Blank tells the tale of one mans quest to find meaning in his life.
And where better a place to start ...
Matt (Josh Hartnett) is having a hard time moving on six months after his relationship with bombshell Nicole (Vinessa Shaw) ended. He finds himself involved in empty physical relationships that are unfulfilling and ultimately send him fleeing. His solution is to give up sex and anything sexual for the 40 days of Lent. Initially, Matt is empowered by his decision until he meets stunning Erica (Shannyn Sossamon), the girl of his dreams, at the local laundromat. Erica doesn't know about Matt's vow of abstinence, which impacts their budding relationship. To complicate matters more, Matt's co-workers are determined to literally put their two cents in as well by establishing a betting pool about how long Matt can keep his vow. Hartnett is endearing as the clumsy Matt, who desperately wants to do the right thing. Griffin Dunne stars as Matt's sex-starved boss. Also starring Paulo Costanzo and Maggie Gyllenhaal, the film was produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, the team that made 'Notting Hill' and 'Bridget Jones' Diary', and directed by Michael Lehmann ('Heathers'). The city of San Francisco provides a beautiful backdrop to this modern look at love that includes a touch of crude teen-movie humour.
