The Lady Vanishes - Or Does She?

Advantages: An enjoyable Hitchcock thriller with a fair bit of comedy
Disadvantages: Some might find it dated

about 2.5 minutes of random scene shots from the film which play like a screen show as well as marketing posters of the film and even a few shots of Hitchcock with cast members during filming. I would be happy to give The Lady Vanishes a strong 8 out of 10. It is certainly a very enjoyable thriller with elements of comedy and a bit of romance and it is definitely a film that is staying in my permanent DVD collection. I would hope the film would appeal to all those who enjoy old black and white films although some might find the overt ?British-ness? of some of the characters rather dated. Of course, I mustn?t forget to mention that there is the cameo appearance of Hitchcock himself in the film which I always enjoy looking out for; no matter how many times I?ve seen one of his films! The 39 Steps - Unmissable Hitchcock Thriller

Advantages: Robert Donat, one of Hitchcock's favourites in action
Disadvantages: None

Alfred Hitchcock's adaptation of the John Buchan novel"The 39 Steps" produced in 1935 was the 24th film that he directed. Voted into the British Film Institute's top 5 British Films. It runs for 106 minutes and is in black and white. A classic Hitchcock thriller based upon the mistaken identity theme, starts with Richard Hannay, brilliantly portrayed by Robert Donat) meeting the exotic "icy blonde" (Lucie Mannheim) at music hall show presenting a "Mr Memory" (Wylie Watson). She is terrified and asks for his help and they return to his appartment. She explains she is a British spy attempting to break a spy ring and asks to stay with him as she is being followed. In the night she appears to him with a knife in her back, clutching a map and muttering something about the "39 Steps", telling him the leader has a portion of his ...

39 Steps to Heaven

Advantages: The reason why everyone should watch old films!
Disadvantages: Begone from my sight if you think there is a single flaw here

Now we?re into favourite film territory. It is quite likely I?ve seen this film more times than there are titular steps. In many ways The 39 Steps is a comfort film for me; one of those films you can shrug on like a warm old overcoat and luxuriate within. Perhaps this is because The 39 Steps is just such unashamed good fun and at the same time so remarkably well constructed. The 39 Steps marked the emergence of Hitchcock as a major talent, for though this came on the back of his hugely successful, for the time and certainly in Britain, The Man Who Knew Too Much, The 39 Steps is by far the more sophisticated of the two films and the first of his films to have that central theme that so many Hitchcock movies have: the innocent man on the run from the law, having to prove his innocence. In many ways Hitchcock?s The 39 Steps ...
