Advantages: You get to see a movie icon. Disadvantages: Not another old film review.
...Being an Oldgoth, I have a taste for old classic black and white horror movies, and The Mummy is one of them.
The Mummy DVD is part of the Universal Studios Classic Monster Collection, other in the collection include Dracula and Frankenstein, so keep an eye out for reviews on these later (sorry for the plug).
This version is the 1932 classic with BorisKarloff, billed as the Uncanny in the main staring role, as Im-Ho-Hep a high Egyptian priest, and the Egyptian historian Ardath Bey. The plot is that Im-Ho-Hep is revived after 3, 700 years by British archaeologists in 1921 after finding Im-Ho-Hep bandage mummy.
The film then jumps forward to 1931 when as Ardath Bay, he sets out to find this lost love. This lost love is played by Zita Johann who plays the duel role of Helen Grosvenor a woman from a very old Egyptian family...

...The most important, horror movie ever made, with BorisKarloff
joining the immortals as the flat headed,big-booted,sad eyed
monster-whom director James Whale made a resonant figure by
dressing him up like one of the scarred WW1 veterans then on the
skids all over America. Colin Clive,s neurotic mad scientist
and Dwight Frye,s hunchbacked brain dropper, collaborate on the
making of a man,but the innocent turn,s savage when mistreated
by all and sundry.
Besides Karloff,s still heartbreaking mime,the film offer,s
wonderful gothic set,s,a cracking laboratory,Whale,s slyly camp
gallows humour, a torch bearing peasant mob and many other images
that resonate through the years..
Truly a classic....

Advantages: Good CG effects; sometimes a bit funny I suppose Disadvantages: Don't watch it if you don't like bugs
...If you're after big-budget special effects and thrills, this film is for you. If, however, you tend to cringe at embarrasingly bad acting and poorly drawn characters, steer well clear.
Supposedly a remake of the 1932 BorisKarloff 'classic', The Mummy follows a Brit and his sister (upper-class twits, obviously - this is an American film) as they are led by a swashbuckling American to a lost Egyptian city, or something. Thankfully it's not played straight, so at least it's not supposed to be taken seriously, but after a while the female lead's 'feisty damsel in distress' turn becomes very irritating (after her drunken scene you will have lost the will to live).
DVD features lots of extra stuff such as a 'Making Of', and also some PC-installable programs so you can play The Mummy Game. Don't bother....
