It seems to be a growing trend in Hollywood to remake old films for the younger audiences and for me this is certainly a remake that works very well. They have taken the original story written by Elmore Leonard and the original screenplay by Halsted Welles and added a bit to it, but at the same time kept it true to its original Western values.
After witnessing a stagecoach robbery on the road into Bisbee Dan Evans (Christian Bale) arrives in town just in time to witness the capture of the man responsible for the hold up, Ben Wade (Russell Crowe). Desperate for money to save his land Evans volunteers to help the local sheriff get Wade to the Yuma prison. The main obstacle in their way is Wade's gang who will be determined to free him and as a result Evans and the other 4 members of the escort party must stay a few steps ahead of the pursuing gang.
I've never really been a big fan of Western's, mainly due to my mum watching hundreds of them when I was younger. I did however fancy giving the 3:10 to Yuma a try as Russell Crowe seems to really be stepping up his performances of late and I really like Christian Bale's movies. The result is a modern take on an older film and I for one think it really works well. It seemed from my point of view to be a good introduction to the Western film genre and was certainly an entertaining evenings viewing.
The new version of this film is the brain child of director James Mangold, the man behind Girl Interrupted and Cop Land. It was however the first time I've actually watched one of his films.
If there was one aspect of the film that really made it feel like a classic western then it had to be the scenery. I felt that Mangold used camera angles and views that really accentuated the film and the action very well. The film had quite a quick pace to it and he managed to handle the faster paced action scenes just as well as the more philosophical moments where Wade tried to get into the head of Evans. All in all it is a very impressively made film that on one of those very odd occasions at least justifies the decision to remake it. Of course I haven't seen the original and perhaps if i had my opinion on this may have been slightly different.
Of course the days of groups of actors in Hollywood simply to star in Western's have long gone. So for that reason Mangold has taken his pick from some of the most talented actors available at the moment. The casting of Russell Crowe in the lead role would, a few years ago, been a real surprise to me but it seems recently he is really coming into his own. His portrayal of the apparently heartless Ben Wade is simply stunning. He gives a very gripping performance that alongside his performance in American Gangster has really enhanced my opinion of him as a leading actor.
Alongside Crowe is yet another impressive performance from Christian Bale. As the other lead in the film he is equally as impressive as Crowe's performance. They seemed to work very well together and both leads really shine using each other and the relationship that develops between their characters really shines through. The rest of the support cast do exactly what's required of them, with Ben Foster particularly impressive as Wade's right hand man. All in all though the casts performance is exactly what the film needs and creates a very enjoyable movie.
Overall this movie has certainly improved my opinion of Western's and from a personal point of view might have actually encouraged me to start watching a few more now. The decision to remake this seems to have been a good one as Mangold has really made an enjoyable movie, with excellent cast performances that will be a good introduction to the Western genre for anyone unsure if it's for them. The film has a lot of action scene's and over its 122 minute run time it means that you don't as a viewer find yourself getting bored. It certainly didn't feel that long and I certainly felt entertained once it had finished. Certainly a film I would have no hesitation in recommending.

...Crowe and Christian Bale the 3:10 to Yuma in in my opinion one of the best Western Movies for a long time. The film is directed by James Mangold and follows the story of Ben Wade ( Russell Crowe ) a ruthless outlaw who so far has committed 21 robberies on the railroads. His 22nd attempt was not quite as easy as the other 21. He is captured and the railroad intend to transport him to Yuma on the 3:10 train and to a prison there.
Meanwhile on a ranch ... ...having problems keeping up payments on his ranch and in dire straights. He is trying hard to make ends meet, and in the process trying to raise a family. His teenage son seems to think his father a bit of a wimp, until in a desperate effort to raise the funds required to pay his debts he offers to assist in the transportation of Wade to Yuma and the action begins. Evans lost his leg in the war for which he received the princely sum of 198$ so he ...

Advantages: EXITING AND REALISTIC WESTERN Disadvantages: NONE
When a psychopathic outlaw falls into the hands of lawmen in a small town, someone has to make sure he boards a train bound for Yuma and prison-the 3-10, and all the while his gang are circling like dusty sharks.
That's the plot in a nutshell of this exiting and realistic western.
Ben Wade the psychopath is of the most dangerous variety-namely an intelligent one and Russell Crowe turns him into a most charismatic villain.
Watch him in the scene ... ...on to her personality and longings, and hes alone with her for only about a minute.
Christian Bale is Dan Evans the farmer under pressure on several fronts-businessmen who want his land by any means to further the railroad (railroads being a constant theme throughout the movie) his wife struggling against the threat of poverty, a rebelious son who sees an opening as Alpha Male and his own severe war handicap thats left him with a tin foot. But he ...

Advantages: Great western, Adventure great cast of actors Disadvantages: not long enough for one of those epic westerns
When I first saw this film I couldn't keep my eyes of it. I loved the way this remake has been taken into the 21st century with two great actors, Christian Bale (Batman Begins), and Russell Crowe (Gladiator).
Crowe plays Ben Wade, notorious bank robber and vicious killer of men. The film begins with Wade and his motley gang of thugs waylaying a Railroad Company payroll coach guarded by Pinkertons. In the process of pulling off this heist, Wade runs ... ...soldier who's fallen on hard times. The two men part ways over steel-eyed glares, but as if guided by fate, they run into each other again later that day in town. This time, however, Wade is captured and is to be sent to the gallows at Yuma prison by train. Crushed by the growing realization that he is failing as both a husband and a father, Dan gives in to desperation and volunteers to escort Wade to the prison train for $200. Thus begins a journey ...

A nice big shoot out at the end that was very enteretaining and alot of pathos creeated for Bale and alot of admiration created for his noble character whose deteremined to go on in spite of everyone else leaving him and large bribes being offered. Advantages: you see for yourself Disadvantages: you see for yourself
American Western film is a lost genre in this age of Toyota, Honda and Kia. Look, Asian brands are even kicking asses of American auto companies. We see horses and we'd likely think of them as part of a Marlboro commercial. So this movie's a bold move back to the brave, old world. I think my two-hour ride with them fast horses, ruthless cowboys and sneaky Indians in the wilderness of Arizona was all worth it.
Even more so given that 3:10toYuma stars Russell Crowe (Ben Wade) and Christian Bale (Dan Evans). Yes, I am kidding you not. The performances of these two gifted actors should be enough reason for you to watch this. Their tandem is not exactly like Jacky Chan and Chris Tucker in Rush Hour franchise or between John Travolta and Nicolas Cage in Face/Off. Crowe and Bale neither tease each other so that the other could deliver ...
Advantages: Shoot out scenes Disadvantages: Not a great role for Russell Crowe
Alot was to be expected from the western 3:10toYuma with such actors as Russell Crowe(such films as Gladiator) and Christian Bale(Batman) however after the successfulness of James Mangold Walk the Line, this film has failed to provide a adequate supply of the thrilling scenes which Westerns have come to give us. A un-realistic close bond which is created between these unfamiliar foes, which blossoms throughout the film at least adds something different to the film, however a lack of storyline and constant cat and mouse chase between Russell Crowe's gang and Christian Bale, make out for a ending which was to be expected by many of the viewers, after both actors successfulness, this film is a step back in their amazing line up to films in which they have acted and will hope to forget and move on. ...
